Exhaust manifold/pipe question
My 68 SBC has aftermarket headers and sidepipes. The headers are old and rusted and I bought a pair of original rams horn manifolds to replace them.
The original parts catalogs show a donut, inner sleeve, etc to hook the manifold to the pipe. Is all this really needed or can a standard 3 bolt gasket seal the connection?

The manifold has a beveled portion at the entrance, the exhaust pipe has a bevel at the entrance that holds the retainer on, the donut gasket goes between. You have to have the bevel so you have something for the retainer to hold. If originality is not important, you might consider C4 TPI "shorty headers". They have a true 2 1/2 inch outlet.
