pictures of crossmember damage - help
I am putting together a front crossmember repair piece for the tech forum and would appreciate any pictures or links to old threads that show the damage that results when the lower A-arm pulls loose. Either post the link here or e-mail pictures to hcabplanalp@ucdavis.edu. I should have it done in a few days. Thanks in advance.

Hey, what a coincidence that I am working on a similar paper. I had requested a lot of the same type of information and I even got the template from you. I know that was a while ago but I am nearly done with it. I think it will be interesting to see if your take on the subject is similar or not. If you don't get many photos I can send you what I have. I'm not sure I have everyone properly credited for each photo so there will be some gaps in the info of who's car it is. Do you have high-speed internet? I can e-mail them to you.

Re: pictures of crossmember damage - help (Wrencher)
As a C3 novice I find this whole subject very distressing. I have only had my 71SB vert a few months. It needs plenty of work before I can drive it regularly,T-arms(on the way),suspension, steering, exhaust etc...
Now I have to wonder if a full body off chassis resto is in order because the thing might colapse under me!!! I guess it's nothing a bit of time, effort and money won't fix.
Don't get me wrong... I purchased the car because I like working on them, but it seems the more knowledge I gain the longer the "To Do List" gets!!!
I would like to thank you guys for making newcomers like me aware of these potentially life threatening situations. I just wonder how many more there are that I don't know about?????
I am really looking forward to finished repair info :lurk:
Cheers
Mick
p.s Do you guys think that the VPB spreader bar Is a worthwhile purchase?

The spreader bar is THE answer to preventing this, without reinforcing the whole crossmember/control arm brackets.
Here is a picture of just behind the front nut block on the lower control arm bracket. Note the crack starting to form at the corner.
Also note that my frame is upside-down in this picture.
Here is a couple shots of the rear bracket pulling away at the top:
... and welded up.
See my sig for the added gussetts, welded brackets, and my jack plate.
A spreader bar is definitely being added, too.
EDIT - finished work below.

Re: pictures of crossmember damage - help (burners)
Right on, Burners. We should compare notes and maybe combine 'em. I have a fiber line so no problem on the pictures. I just did a short overview of the problem and then I am concentrating on the reinforcing plate how-to.
Send 'em to: hcabplanalp@ucdavis.edu

Ozzie71, don't stress! It's probably fine on yours (climb under and take a look) and adding the reinforcing plates is gravy. Enjoy the car...

Dave, what thickness steel palte did you sue? It looks kind of thin. I'm using something in the order of 4/16th and my gussets run straight to the side of the frame.
