OT: Understanding the rating numbers for aluminum??
I've been calling several local shop looking for aluminum stock.
From what I've been told 7075 T6 has about twice the tensile strength of 6061 T6. (80,000 vs 42,000)
I found the size of 7075 I need at a reasonable price, but the guy said it is T411 not T6.
What is the difference? Any links to pages that explain this rating system?

Go to this site and look up the different types of aluminum in the nonferrous metals search bar. It tells all aluminum properties.

I use 6061 T6 for most things and a step up is 2024 which is rated aircraft quality. 6061 T6 weld nicely too.

Wow Greg, that is a fantastic site. Very comprehensive.
dasgers, the difference between a T4 heat treatment and a T6 is that the T6 is artificially aged so that it will have full strength sooner. T4 will probably be within 1000 or 2000 psi ultimate of T6 so 7075 T4 will still be stronger than 6061 T6. Keep in mind that 7075 can't be welded.

Greg454, thanks for the link, very interesting stuff. Although I didn't find anything explaining T6 vs T4.
Burners, thanks to you for providing an explanation of the differences.
