Re: Did All C3's come with Power Steering? (1bad69)
A slip of the fingers posted the thread before I finished my question.
I would like to get rid of my PS and go with a rack&pinion.
Any one done this and how?
Thanks.

Steeroids kit. I think you can set the rack up with or without power.
Here: http://www.speeddirect.com/
Some members here have adapted their own rack systems.
I see mixed reviews on this modification.
Either people are very happy or very frustrated.

Re: Did All C3's come with Power Steering? (NHvette)
I looked at the steeroids at the link given by NHvette but it showed a system using the power steering pump.
I would like to go away from power steering.
Is there any system available that won't be brutal armstrong steering?

Look for earlier C3's. Many of those were manual steering. As the C3 got further from performance (early) and more into cruising (later), power steering becomes more common. C2 steering hardware should work as well. I think the only difference is in the drag link and possibly the pitman arm. Some of the manual setups also used a steering damper but I don't know if they all did. The tie rods, idler arm, and spindles are the same except that manual steering uses the outer set of spindle holes while the power steering setup uses the inner set of holes.
Try posting in the parts section of the Forum and see if anyone's interested in swapping.

Re: Did All C3's come with Power Steering? (bluevetteman)
I think the feeling back in the muscle car era was that power assists interfered with a "true" driver's car and were unnecessary. I don't necessarily agree with that view, but that was common. My '68 was built with the hi po 327/m21/3.70 posi drivetrain and no power assists, not even windows. I like it that way, but then I don't drive it every day in rush hour traffic, like the original owner may well have.
As performance started to fade in the early 70's, interest in comfort/convenience took over. Noting the trends to these options (ps/pb/air/auto) in the "black book" over the many years is interesting, especially the trend to automatics through the 70's.

Theres a site that retro's a modern power steering box to the c3. I think its corvettesteering.com. I haven't personally used it but have heard good things about it.
I removed the power steering from my 75. All I needed was the center steering rod. The only drawback is I have a hard time getting into my side entry garage. But the road feel is wonderful and I would never go back to the old power steering system.

I have driven some old cars with no power anything. Sorry but I won't do that again. My 77 has power assist. I have great road feel and I don't have to make 15 point turns to back her into my garage.
But the steeroids kit , from what I have heard, is a crap shoot for your frustration levels. But something you should definitly look into.

I have the stock 1970 steering. It is great. You don't need strong arms, you just need to have the wheels moving (ie 1 mph) to steer a C3. These cars aren't hondas so don't try and squeeze into a parking space!

Re: Did All C3's come with Power Steering? (stingry)
If you go to Google and type in the year and ask for corvette history ie: "1970 corvette history" and hit search you can go to a page that has all of the factory specs & will also tell you of all the standard & options that were available for the car. Will give colors available, how many coupes were produced, engines & trans that were available & so on.

TTop Tony,
How hard was it to change your 75 from power steering to manual.
What steps did you take and where did you get parts from?

Going from PS to manual steering is simple: Remove all of the power-assist stuff (slave cylinder, pump, etc...)
Going to a manual rack system is more difficult. There are manual racks available that are of the same vintage as those used in the steeroids system, so it's posisble to install that system with a manual rack, but I have no idea how difficult it would be to steer.
Why do you want to go manual?
