Just got off the phone from Tire Rack.

Jordan from customer service called me because I had ordered tires too tall for my car. Even though it is only 0.5" it is good to know they care enough to pick up the phone. I wonder what they would have done if I had ordered some of those 20" ricer rims and 40 profile tires!:rolleyes:

Here are some interesting numbers for you.

Common Replacment
225/70/15 27.4"

Correct Size
215/70/15 26.9"

The also have the White letter Dunlop Qualifier GT (T Rated) for $55 a piece. Good service and a great price. Happy with that!

I like the 245/60 BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. Wear like iron, and fit well in the C3 wheel well. Mine are 5 years old, and are about 26 inches high with 28 lbs of pressure in them.

My car would look rediculous with small tires like that. They are the 70 series. YOu can find a much bigger tire in the 50 series with the same height.
My 305-50-15 are about the same height.

the door sticker on my 79 shows 255/60/15 . I've got 235/70/15's on it now, but will put back on the original size when these wear out.

It seems more and more companies are trying to ensure they sell the right tires for the car. I would assume they do not want to be sued if they knowingly sell the wrong tire. There is not just one tire that is correct. As long as the tire meets or exceeds what the factory installed they are pretty safe in selling them to you. My 76's door sticker says the factory tire is a GR70/15, which equates to a 225/70R/15. My preference has always been to use a wider tire. The 255/60R/15 is the match for it in height and almost 33% wider. I was planning on using a 50 series on the rear, but due to the information I received here on the forum I realize that I this is not just a tire change. Other modifications such as repositioning the emergency brake bracket/cable would have to be done. Knowing this valuable information saved me a ton of grief.

I like the wide tires but to be IMHO a higher wall gives a slightly softer ride and I wanted the car to be comfortable. The other bonus of the slightly narrower tires is it will be easier to steer. If they turn out to be duds then when I get back to Australia I will get some 17 inch rims and get lower profile tires on it. I want to keep as much on the car original (well sorta) for now until it gets to OZ so that I don't have to lug boxes of original parts with the car, better on it then in boxes for now.

I have BF Goodrich Comp TA 245/45/17 now, but next tires will be different make and size. 255/45/17 will fit in and those are my next tires. :auto:

My '77 has 245/60-R15. The rear spring outer mounts are very close to the tires. On my C3, I wouldn't go wider without plans for some modifications.

Can you still buy BF Goodrich Comp TA tires for C3 Corvettes? One of my local sources said they couldn't these any more.

It's all good ... I use mine for cruising and carving back road corners... I like my tire choice because the fitment is good and relatively economical to boot. :seeya
