Default Question on big block valve covers

Finished putting the engine together yesterday, just need to add valve covers. I have the originals but they're kinda beat up. A few dents, lots of rust pits, etc. What is everyone running for a big block with power brakes? Don't want to order something now & then have a problem when the body goes back on.

Thanks
Jim

I use some inexpensive ones (about $30) I bought off ebay. There are a lot of them listed there. I got the ones with the relief "dent" on the driver's side for the brake booster, but there's plenty of space in there, really, and I don't think you need the relief, so pretty much any normal (as opposed to the aftermarket tall ones that are made to clear roller rockers) covers ought to work.

Those are exactly the ones I bought, I think, & that's an awfully good price for them. I bought mine as temps to put on until I got around to getting my originals rechromed, but they've been on there for over a year now because I'm lazy and they look and seal great (no leaks yet!).

One other consideration--the originals are only flash chromed, which is very thin and not quite as shiny as the triple chome on the repros. That's both good and bad, because the repros are less prone to rust spots and definitely look better, but it's also pretty easy to anyone who knows what the originals look like to tell the difference, if that's important to you.

The covers I have are not dented to clear the booster. Probably not originals though. I did a search earlier & came across some comments that dented covers are not needed for 69 & up. Cranes corvettes says there are 4 types, with 70 - 74 needing a cover with a sloped end. Hmmmm maybe I'll just clean these up & install them for now. Then I can research further & buy a good set of chrome when the car is complete.

Thanks for the help

I confess :D bought those last night. For the price, $18.50 its not worth cleaning the old ones. Besides it'll look better on the stand :lolg: .

Thanks for the heads up Mark

Jim,

My original BB valve covers did not have the large brake booster indentation, only a small relief in the back of the drivers side valve cover.

If you ever want to go back to stock covers here is how I refinished mine.

Saw that and that's the route I was going to take untill Mark pointed out that auction. For the price it wasn't worth the work when I have so many other things to do. My 70 should have the same covers in chrome, from the archive search I found out that Cranes Corvette in San Diego is reproducing all 4 styles. Not cheap though - $425 per pair IIRC. That'll have to wait:yesnod:

That's why I'm going to eventually get my originals rechromed--that only costs about $70 a cover. There were four different styles in 1969 & the cheapo repros only come in slanted or not slanted, so to look right, that's the way to go unless you can luck into the exactly correct OEM covers on ebay. What I can't decide is whether to get my originals rechromed with the correct but cheap, thin, and easily damaged flash chrome, or to go unoriginal and have them triple chromed.

If you pay up to have the originals triple chromed.... they will look just like the $18 covers! There are so many variations on the originals I can't figure out what mine are supposed to look like anyway. MJ
