O/T Sony 5.0 Megapixel Camera
Anyone have one? After literally thousands of Corvette pics I have taken with my Kodak DC280 (2.1 Megapixel) it may be time to upgrade. That Kodak has never let me down except for close-ups. Fine camera but technology does move on. The Sony is on sale locally and looks like a good buy. Would be interested in your experiences. Thanks!

That Kodak is a great camera the picture quality is second to none. Sony used to be a good company, something happened a few years ago and quality went for a you know what. Just my 2 cents :D

I've got the Mavica CD400 and love it. Zoom lens, records to mini-cd's, can transfer to PC via CD or USB. Tons of features. Got it from Sony with free shipping and 6mo same as cash. :hurray:

Mine is the Sony Cybershot DSC F707 5.0 MegaPixels. I have had it for about two years and have been quite happy with it. I think there are more advanced versions than the one I have.
I am not really an expert. It just takes a good pic and I am satisfied with it. See my pics below. :)

I went to buy the same camera and got talked out of it by the sales person. My main interest is pictures for the internet/ this forum and the 5.0 is way too large. I ended up with a 3.2 mega pixel and it take up to 3 meg pictures but you can not post them here. I find about 300 k is more then enough for the forum, 1 meg for person pictures.
The 5 meg is just too much camera.

Paid $480 and it does it all.
You can take Hi-Res pics or Low, any jeg program will adjust. With the 5 meg pics you can get photo quality pics above 8x10 that the lower res will not do.

I have the Sony DSC-S70 3.2 Megapixel. It is about 3 or 4 years old. All of the pics I post on here have been 640x480 which are a good size. It will take a 3.2 megapixel pic but like someone said it is way to big for this forum. For Christmas I bought my wife the Canon Digital Rebel. That thing takes hugh by hugh pics. No good at all for the forum. But it does take great pics.

Re: O/T Sony 5.0 Megapixel Camera (Eddie 70)
Paul I bought the Sony CD-200 when it was top line 2 years ago. 2.1MP at $800 and now their 5.0MP for $500 with a zeiss lens. As a Navy NC I shoot a couple hundred shots a month and I can hold 1000 pics and several movies depending on movie quality/ length on one disk with a measly 2.1MP. Imagine a 5.1 Go mavica or similar mini-disc.
reasons why:
1. the disc is just like a CD-ROM and can hold 300% more than any memory stick made today.
2. when you get the camera you need nothing. you get a mem. stick model you need to buy all these larger sticks and they gouge you.
3. Once your done you simply throw the disc into the CD/DVD-ROM of your PC and your done. No wires, no cables, no docking ports no software to slow your PC.
4. When you take pics for a friend you can give that disc to anyone in the world (79 cents) and they can get their pics with no software needed. Try that with a stick camera. No more "'oh I have to download the pics and e-mail it to you, oh you have hotmail won't fit...hmmm?
5. Why do you think the Navy buys counselors Mavica's? Now I have 2.
Okay I'm spent.

I'm looking for a digital camera thats FAST! I have the Sony 2.1 mp camera and forget about taking any action shots with that thing...it's great for stills but you when have a baby & wanna capture his 1t smile or other milestones...it sucks! Several times I wanted to smash that thing into bits because of so many good missed shots! :smash:
I prefer the Sony brand & Sony memory stick as I have the Sony Wega TV with the memory stick adapter...makes picture viewing fast & simple.
Are the newer Sonys fast?

I bought the Kodak DX6340(3.1MP) around 4 months ago. I don't think I'd need a better quality camera than this one.
On the lowest resolution the pictures when sent to Walmart for developing are fantastic. On the highest resolution they can be developed 8"X 10" and they are still sharp as ever. Plus it has video with audio which is an added bonus.

Re: O/T Sony 5.0 Megapixel Camera (MikeC)
I just bought the Kodak DX6440 after a LOT of conversation with the sales guy. The bottom line that he taught me is that it is all about the lens, even more than the Mega Pixels. A high MP with a low quality lens will not take as good a picture as a lower MP with a really good lens. The quality of the lens is going to have a huge impact on the picture.
The DX6440 I ended up with is 4.0 MP and has a Schneider lens. Quality is fantastic. :D

Before you buy the Sony take a look at the Canon and Olympus high res. cameras. I find them superior to the Kodak and Sony, but I use mine and purchase for my dept. to use in making books & film projects. As long as it has a glass lense and you are happy with the pic qualtiy and price I am sure you will be happy. Just don't be talked into the mega features that most ppl would never use and add a quite a few $ to the cost. The quality and strength of your batteries will affect the speed and image quality.

Re: O/T Sony 5.0 Megapixel Camera (gdh)
I researched 4 and 5 MP cameras for 6 weeks. I bought a few at a time---tested them (as I would use it...nothing "scientific"), shot a 100 or so shots, took the media to Costco for their .19 cent printing (FANTASTIC!! ), and compared detail-color-flash performance-macro performance, etc.
In my opinion, the Canon family of camers BLEW AWAY every other brand.
I bought the 5 MP Canon S-50, and I LOVE it. Small enough for you pocket, yet it is a metal cased camera! It retails for about $390 now. If you want to do some serious shooting, you will need more memory than is supplied by the manufacturer. Again, Costco/Sams/BJ's have the media priced very resonably. By the way, I work for a LARGE, worldwide Japanese camera/copier/optics company, and I still bought the Canon!
There are a few internet sites to check for reviews, such as Steves Digicam, etc.
If you see or read about something you like, I suggest that you purchase it from a WalMart store, WalMart on line, or one of the above mentioned warehouse clubs. They have the most liberal return policies, providing everything is there and in good condition.
GOOD LUCK!!!
PS----Remember, you can not buy "too many" megapixels in a consumer/prosumer model. You DO NOT need to shoot in the highest resolution or the lowest level of compression. For e maill and hosting pics online you would want a small resolution or a highly compressed file==BUT===
when you need/want a 5 MP shot, those MP's will be there for you!

Dunno about the Sony, but I use an expensive 6 M/P Nikon digital SLR in my business- and my friend's Kodak 5 M/P 'cheapie' takes better pictures! Kodak has the best software, IMHO.

Thanks everyone. You have given me a lot to think about! I will check some on-line reviews and do some browsing at Future Shop today.

Re: O/T Sony 5.0 Megapixel Camera (MotorHead)
I did a couple of years research before finally deciding on a digital camera. After reading many reviews by critics and consumers, I decided on the Sony DSC-717. It takes excellent pictures and good battery life. It has "burst mode" to allow you to take action shots. I have not used that feature yet and I've had the camera for 2 years now. It's not a small camera though, but a heck of a lot lighter than my 35mm! It will also take video, excellent sound, video picture is awful! But...it was made to be a camera, not a video camera.
There are a lot of good cameras out there today. Do your research and you shouldn't be disappointed. One of the sites I use for feedback on a product is http://www.cnet.com
