I have two 76 vettes. One L48 auto and one L82 4 spd. Both are early 76's with the A6 A/C compressor. Neither has an idle stop solenoid mounted to the carb. Both carbs are Q-jets and are correct for the year and options. The L48 auto does not have the holes taped where the idle stop solinoid bracket shoud be mounted but the L82 4 spd. carb does have taped holes. The idle stop solenoid is supposed to bump up the idle when the A/C compressor is on.
What is correct? Did all early 76 Vettes auto or 4 spd. have this solenoid or not? I am confussed. I couild not find any reference to this in my repair manuals. It does show up on the wiring diagram. Do I need a solenoid????
Thanks! Greg

I can't speak for the early 76's but my late L48 A/C does not have one either, and it is the correct carb. I don't think that it should have one on yours. I know a 75 does not either. Hope this helps.

Both 76's have the extra green wire female connector comming off the A/C compressor to activate the solenoid. Why would they put the connector there and not have a solenoid. Was this a California emmissions thing? Does your idle rpm drop way down when the compressor kicks in?

Yep- no solenoid. Mine is an A/C, L-82 w/ 4spd. original carb. It drops way down, almost stalls when the AC comes on. The curb idle is also very high - 900-1100rpm as per the manual. It must of been a smog thing. It is not a California model though, so I think they must have all been this way. I am waiting to get mine smogged 1 more time in 2005 and then fix all the smog related issues.

Couldn't tell ya. My compressor has been gone a long time. It could be that the compressor wire was part of a harness and if it was not used, it was just "tied back" at the factory. It is cheaper for GM to do that than buy, stock, and install 2 different harnesses. According to Corvette Central there is only one 76 A/C harness, so this could be the case. Just a theory. Might want to check your wiring diagram.
