A little before and after pumpkin pix
I spent the last week cleaning the rear suspension parts for painting up.
The pumpkin is coming out nice. There is a coat of silver POR then dusted
with Krylon semi-flat black. The cover is next, since you really can't juggle
the pumpkin around with a fresh coat of POR15.
If I get the time this weekend, I will be installing most of this.
First, what do you think about repairing the dust shield on this spindle flange
with POR then JB Weld ? The mechanical portion of the flange is fine.
Here are a few pix:

Looks good Dave, but since you have all these parts out aren't you going to rebuild them before putting them back in the car?

Thanks for all the good comments, guys.
Gary, the differential itself has never given me reason to dig into it.
It is pretty tight, with no detectable slack in the gears.
The side yokes and seals were replaced shortly before taking her off the road.
The trailing arm assemblies (Van Steel rebuilt) only have about a season
on them, too. I wasn't even going to replace the Ujoints - but one was frozen,
so there goes another $100. All hardware will be new, even the good grade8
bolts that are holding the cover on now will be replaced.
BTW - the 'before' of the rusty pumpkin is just before applying POR15. It was
a mess of flaking paint and greasy dirt when I started.

spots, to the point where you could bend it with your hands. These flanges
run $50-100 depending on where you buy them.

The flange slides right off by hand ... it has to come off to get the assembly into the trailing arm.
I just don't want to pay $100 each for them.

Nice Dave, the only thing you might want to consider is adding a drain plug while you have it out. I use POR15 metal ready, then the gloss black, then top coat with either Eastwood clear, cast blast or detail gray.
I sent you some pictures of a couple of things I just finished working on.

You can get the deflector shields that go on the spindle flange cheap. They're like $4 each. Take a hammer and knock the old ones off. Than get a pipe that will fit over the hat of the spindle flange and hit it on. 5 minute job.

You ever think about painting those half shafts like a red and white barber pole? Wouldn't that look different going down the road? :lolg: :jester

Very Nice. Have fun putting the front springs in with no weight on the frame.
Even with a compressor, it's still a PITA.

Nice work weather proofing the differential and 1/2 shafts  No need to get fancy here as the rear is hard to see on such a low car - and hidden by the spare tire too. And that POR15 finish looks nice by itself.
Just my 2 pennys but it wouldn't cost a dime just to get a quote on a re-seal & bearing overhaul. As $200 now could save a lot of frustration later.
I say this as my car rode just fine but when I went for the ring and pinion change they found my posi-springs worn out and no 2-wheel positration. Clutch pack was like brand new - 100% slip. :yesnod:

Re: A little before and after pumpkin pix (Van Steel)
Thanks Jim and Dan, I didn't know they came off. Cool.
As far as color scheme ... it's all gonna be black and gold.
You should be able to see some of it, since I will not be replacing the spare tire carrier.
The differential is a pe\iece of cake to drop out, with all new hardware.
It's going back in without a rebuild. If I rebuild it, it will be with a higher
ratio. Not in the budget of time or $.
The spring install should go OK. I've devised some braces that screw up to the
garage rafters and keep the frame from raising. I can easily compress the springs with a floor jack.
Speaking of spring ... it's like 60 here today.
Boy, I wish I were driving. :steering:
