Need fan shroud advise.
I purchased a 1970 that is missing the fan shroud. Is this something that I need to replace or will I be Ok? I am concerned I will have a cooloing problem in those hot summer days.

You need the correct shroud, clutch fan, and seals or your car will overheat. There were different radiators for the engine transmission combos.

They are tough to put in. The hood has to come off and then the radiator and shroud sorta goe in as a unit. there are many shrouds cut in half or three pieces in frustration to remove the radiator. When you get the shroud , get on the forum and someone will help you through the job. If your radiator is marginal now is the time to recore it or replace it. You only want to do that job once. The books say just slide the shroud back and remove the radiator but it's obvious the person that wrote the manual never did one...You'll see... Shrouds are absolutely necessary to the cooling. even then if you are missing any seals these car tend to run warm.. As long as everything is good there is no problem but you can't give up anything either.

I'm replacing my water pump on my '78. It has a 3 belt hub on now. I want to just run withy one hub (alternator only). Will that bring my fan out of the shroud and hence poor cooling?

Consider going to electric fans. (i don't think it will be much more than a new shroud.) Go to Dewitts.com he carrys the shrouds and fans.

I just happen to have an UNUSED GM replacement fan shroud for a '70 that I bought but never put on. It seems that according to NCRS, the shroud should have a certain small diamond-shaped pattern mark that GM no longer applied. (I just kept the original and took the condition point hit.) I also had the foams, but may have cut them up for use elsewhere.
Let me know if you are interested.

Intalling the shroud in one piece, simple,: Step 1) Lift body off. Step 2) install shroud to support. Step 3) drop body back on. Any questions??? :smash:

a: you don't have to remove the hood to remove the radiator. My wife and I just pulled and put the radiator back in to remove the shroud and install electric fans.
b: A belt driven fan should be mounted 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the shroud for best performance. Also do not have more than 1 inch gap all the way around. If you fan hits, then the motor mounts are shot and your engine is moving.
c: unless you are restoring, go electric. It will be a lot easier in the long run.

My brother picked up a 72 and the shroud is very small , but is effective. the one on his appears it can be put on just by taking the fan off

I have changed the radiator twice in my '71. Between changes I had the engine rebuilt. Removing the Rad the 2nd time was not at all like the 1st. 1st just came out as a pair rad/shroud. New motor mounts? 2nd No room to get the shroud out. "A" frames in the way. Removed the hood and the bolts holding the radiator frame and clutch/fan combo. FINALLY had room to install W/O buggering the whole enchillida.
