Default can i weld this

well people,

i finally got my trailing arm assemblies dismantled and started sandblasting them so i can have some of the parts chromed or powdercoated. my question is that i have some indents in the half axles and i wanted to know if i can fillet weld them and grind it down so i can get them smooth to be able to get dipped? also, what are all the main parts made of in the assembly i.e. cast iron/steel....... will there be a problem with chroming if it is cast iron?

thanks

Is it your trailing arm with the dent or your half shaft with the dent????

Wouldnt that cause the half shaft to be out of balance?

That's why I'm asking..... If it's the half shaft, replace it. If it's the trailing arm and you were to powder coat it, chances are the dent will not be that noticable. Chrome trailing arms  I can think of "LOTA" better ways to spend $$$

I would think that if you weld dents in the shafts you are going to put them out of balance. How bad it would be I don't know,, if it was me I would either replace them or at the very least have them balanced.

i thought the same about the brittleness of the chrome on the half shafts..... i know that they make a carbon fiber half shaft that looks cool..... i'm going to refinish the whole rear suspension and install an air ride suspension........ it's gonna be more of a cruiser/tricked ride than a resor...... i'm trying to be different i guess.......

Yes, hydrogen embrittlement. Chroming high stressed parts is not a very good idea IMO.
