Fiberglass Rear Bumper install
Hey guys, I just received my fiber glass rear bumper to install on my 76. First I see I need to remove the inner bumper and supports. The new bumper will not fit into place over the support.
The fiber glass bumper will need "blended" to fit properly.
Has anyone out there bonded this type of bumper AND smoothed the seam where it bolts to the rear of the car to create a smooth look with no seem between the body and bumper?
What did you use for materials and what are the chances of it developing cracks at that seem ..
Thanks in advance.

I've seen it done and it makes it look much nicer; eliminates the "plastic add-on" look. But my body guy wouldn't do it; said it would crack for sure over time. If I had the expertise to do it myself, I would have done it anyway!

I was thinking of bonding and bolting it to the body, then grinding an 1/8 wide groove around the seem and using glass or bondo to fill and blend.
Any you body guys have thoughts on this?
I'd love to do it and it will only be a fair weather weekend driven car.
Thanks

Re: Fiberglass Rear Bumper install (viperjesse)
viperjesse, I glassed my rear bumper in about 4 years ago and so far no cracks. I bolted mine in and then fiberglassed it at the gap and then sanded it , smoothed with bondo and resanded and painted. I really like the results. I also did the front the same way. If you want a smooth look, that is the way to go. Hershey :chevy

Re: Fiberglass Rear Bumper install (stinky)
I glued mine on and bolted it then I grooved it out and glassed it on. I have had no problems. I used 3m automix #8115 to glue it on, then fiberglassed it.

i have done this and it looks great!
the whole rear inner bumper does not have to come off. just the two center offset things.

I glued first...then glassed.
