Master Cylinder Leak
Lately my brake fluid has begin to dissappear. I have a leak in my master cylinder that drains the back fluid tub (when on the driver side of the car its the right tub). It drains in about three days. I took the master cylinder off and it seems to be leaking from with in the inner part where the master cylinder and brake booster bolt together. Would anyone recommend rebuilding my master cylinder or should I just go ahead and purchase a new one. Any input would be appreciated.

I'd go with rebuilt. With a factory rebuild, if it's not right, you'll know right away. Usually the only thing they can screw up is cut an o-ring on installation, and you figure that out real quick during bleeding.

If yours is the original M/C and you're into keeping your car correct, take it off, hone the piston bore and use a Raybestos rebuild kit on her.

Rebuilt master cylinders are the worst item for rebuilt stuff on the planet. I don't know how they get away selling those thing. The gaurantee isn't worth anything when you car is totaled and you in the hospital fighting for survival. Get a new one. They aren't that expensive.

In my case, I had the original numbers matching cylinder and needed to retain it. To take the cylinder out, rebuild it and remount it took 1 hr. The only catch is that the cylinder can't be corroded. I had some fluid sludge in the bottom of the cylinder, but kept cleaning it with fluid and emery cloth. No problems; operates perfect. If it is corroded it can be stainless sleeved though that cost a bit more. The only catch was that the rebuild kit cost $5 more than a whole rebuilt cylinder; but I want to stay original where possible.

One more thing..........the GM shop manual has an excellent procedure for the rebuild if you decide to do it yourself.
