Confessions of an LM1 Owner(Just installed new H-pipe)
I know I've dogged this motor in the past, said it's a piece of poopie or what have you, but I've got to give it credit.
When I first got the engine installed, I g-teched 0-60 at about 8.1 seconds. Not, um, horrible, but definitely not Corvetteesque.
I fixed my ignition timing, tuned the distributor curve, and got time down to 7.6 or so.
Next, I went for a true dual exhaust, and got down to about 7.3 seconds. I seemed to hit a plateau, so I just waited around for the next best thing to come along.
August of last year, I installed headers and the 0-60 time dropped from 7.3 to 6.6 seconds. Not bad at all!
Then I got the carb rebuilt, double checked all the timing and my 0-60 time dropped down to 6.4 seconds.
With my new ultraflo mufflers in place, 0-60 time came in at just a little less, about 6.36 seconds.
I finally got the center section of the car down, went from 2 1/4" cats to 2 1/2" high flow cats, and had an H-pipe welded in. The car idled quieter, had less resonance at 1500 rpm, and just as much bark as before, perhaps even a little more! I could actually hold it in third gear at about 3000 RPM and hardly feel any engine compression whatsoever.
0-60 time is now a svelte 6.2 seconds, and I could probably knock it down to 6.1 as the G-tech curve showed I was launching 0.1G slower than I did with my best run before the H-pipe.
So, what does this all mean? If you've got a vette, and you just want a cruiser, you will get some pretty decent performance out of this motor. Throw in a mild cam and do some portwork on the heads and you'll have an engine that will perform very similarly to a 92-97 LT1 engine.
Oh, and here's the new setup!
And also, according to the Gtech, 171 RWHP, 235 RWTQ.

congrats on your accomplishments
on a totally other note now your car is just as fast as a stock 78 :jester
thats weird because i thought the goodwrench engine was rated at 300hp

Steve
I agree, hard to beat the hp per $, I got mine for under $1400 shipped to my office. I snuck a little bigger came in and was happy has heck, of course it had been sitting for a few years so I was happy to just have it running. :)Anyone on a budget that wants a cheap modest cruiser eng with a little pep can't go wrong with the LM1. As you know I put diff heads and roller cam in and the bottom held up just fine to the beating I put on it. It is just 'resting' on my eng stand ready to jump back into action if called upon. :jester

Battsup- The stock 78 L-48 is rated at 7.6 with a 4-speed. The L-82 was 6.5 with a 4-spd in a magazine, 6.7 by GM.

I did a few Gtech runs in my LM1 Crossfire with just a few mods - self-ported manifold, tbi spacers (oh no!), borlas, new cat - in near 100 degree temps last summer and got 7.1 sec fastest. Need to re-test before temps start going up again. The LM1 is not a real dog - just not a greyhound ;) :cry

Sounds like you have a properly matched combination of parts. How do those mufflers sound? (in relation to Flowmaster 40's)

Re: Confessions of an LM1 Owner(Just installed new H-pipe) (Fevre)
Thats awesome Steve. lets me know that exhaust is really gonna help my car alot. but i plan on doing a new cam and heads, because i need to make the vette beat the Typhoon's 4.88 0-60. i can have my vette loosing to my truck  :smash:
your car is coming along quite nicely. get some sound of the way the new exhaust sounds

I should be getting a job this summer and can save up for a wonderblock. The sig plans have changed a bit...
Also, planning on doing rear suspension. Hard to say which'll come first, but I think the bearings/rear end should be a higher priority.

 Thanks for posting your results Pacin'. It's good to see some one else testing the LM1 motor and happy to talk about it. These low compression motors should live a long time too as if the rpms stay below 5,500. I'm hoping for a engine that will take a lot of 1/4 mile abuse and still get me to work. :chevy
