Default Summit rebuilt kits????

I am starting the process of rebuilding my SB.

I noticed summit has a kit with all you need for a bottom rebuild (pistons, rings, oil pump, etc)

I have heard they are a good kit but wanted to get the veiw of the forum.

I am trying to get 375-400 hp with out going over $2k (so I can drive it this summer) but also don't want to pull it in a few years either.

My stock heads are going to get a full rebuild and I have a performer intake and holly 650 4bbl(mech) to go on top.

Stock my motor is 11:1 but I am thinking of the 10.7:1 kit (with a 30 bore)

I rebuilt my 70 chevelle motor in my camaro with a summit engine kit. I changed a few different things in it though. I am very happy with it. The machine shop that did my crank and pistons on the rods said i have at least 400 hp with the 11 1/2 to 1 pistons. The motor has been very reliabile and strong.

Summit is probably fine. I have used PAW in the past and Northern Auto Warehouse. Both can customize a kit for you and use good quality parts.

Good to hear they are relaible.

I have a PAW catalog in route right now. From what I hear it can take a while to go through its 4inch thickness :smash:

I am trying to learn were the effective money and over paying line is for solid performance parts with out getting to the $1k per 1HP gain situation.

Just paid the car off 2 mo ago, don't want to take a loan out to do the motor now. :cry

My vote is for the Northern Auto Parts 350 rebuild kit with Hypereutectic flattop pistons. It retails for approx $350 and includes all name brand parts.

A complete kit if for a short block rebuild if there ever was one. Check it out:
http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pro...ctModelId=1668

A sampling from the website:

Chevy 350 (to 1985) STREET PERFORMANCE - HP350KH Hypereutectic Pistons
INCLUDES:
Hasting or Sealed Power Moly Rings
Federal Mogul flattop HYPEREUTECTIC Pistons
Clevite Rod Brgs
Clevite Main Brgs
Clevite Cam Brgs
Melling or Sealed Power Hi volume Oil Pump
Crane Energizer Camshaft and Lifter Kit (10 cam options)
Cloyes TRUE Roller Timing Components
Pioneer Frost Plugs
Felpro Gaskets
Make: Chevy
Model: all
Year: to 1985

NOTE: The only original parts left on my engine are the block, crank and rods and the block isn't 100% orig with .020 overbore and the crank has been turned .020 under to boot! :D

Just make sure when you get the pistons changed out you have the rods resized and new bolts put in.

I poped out to their site and saw a simmilar kit but it had some options I would take advantage of.
Thanks for the detail info tedH. I will have about the same original as you do but I am going .030 bore.

What does going .020 under on your crank do?

I used the Summit kit in my C3, and I'm currently installing their cam in my C4. I've found their parts and kits to be good.

If you are talking about the Summit kits with the Speed Pro pistons, etc., I think it is a good deal. On my rebuild I purchased all those parts separately from Summit and spent more than if I would have purchased the kit (they did not offer the kits then). I would purchase the kit if I had to do it over.
