Rear wheel rubbingLast Saturday
 Last Saturday I took "Ginger" my vette out for a ride. A 225 mile drive. I run her on the weekends for at least 100 mi. on the highway. This trip I noticed a vibration in the car from 2000 RPM up. Didnt have it last week. Going slow I can hear a faint rubbing on the right rear tire. Took the tire off, no rub marks anyplace, gut on the creeper check it out. Nothing! :banghead: All new u-joints raer end is new 1-1/2 yrs. HELP!! :seeya Steve

If the tire is rubbing then something moved right? Could it be the tire itself,if you don't see any marks onthe inner fender it could be the tire. Did you have the rear aligned maybe it loosened up the camber setting on the strut rods or if you use those smart struts they loosen up tool, Check the play in the wheel bearings, I had a vette that had about 1/4" play in the bearings when I jacked it up.

Just for good measure, did you check all the tires for rubbing? I have had instances where a tire was making a noise, but sounded like it was coming from another.

I just checked both rear wheel and I have the same amount of play on both sides. About 1/8 inch or less. Not much at all!!! :banghead: I have 67 side pipes they are loud. I'll get a friend to walk beside me and listen to each wheel. I'll keep you posted :seeya Steve

An 1/8" is 125 thousanths--way out of spec! You should seriously consider a rear bearing rebuild....

You have to be sure the play is in the bearings and not the rear yoke,T arm bushing, etc. This is hard to do with the wheel on the car,the 1/8 you have may well be the combination of all the above. It helps to have some one move the wheel while you look at the parts to pick up movement.

 Hay Gary, this what I found this mroning. Jacked up the car put her on stands. With the small floor jack, jacked up the right rear shock mount . Then lift the wheel up, down pushed in and out. The outboard end of the half shaft is bad. I checked the left side and there was no movement. Took the shaft out and removed U-joints. Waiting for them to be delivered. so far I think I was very lucky :hurray: :hurray: Didn't really want to hassle :boxing with the trailing arm. But, this could be just the tip of the iceberg. As you can see I'm not an optimistic kind of guy!! :seeya Steve

Steve,
When you say the outboard end, I'm thinking of the T arm end where the 1/2 shaft goes into the spindle flange. Is this where you're referring to,or possibly the differential end ? It is not uncommon for the differential side yokes to be worn inside the differential giving you the end play you have. Other then a worn out joint on the outboard side where is the play coming from, the spindle? If that is the case you're going to need rear bearings.
Let me know what you find,
Gary

Gary, It was the spindle end. But, I did changed them both anyway. I think it would be stupid to only change one. I had it out on the table. I :steering: the car around the block a couple of times, even turned off the engine and coasted. No noise, squeeks or clunks  The God's were looking down on me today for awhile. But later. Keisler Automotive told me that my new TKO-1 5 speed has a 3 week delay :cry  :( I was to get it 4/10 now it's 5/something. :seeya Steve

Glad to hear you only had U-joints problems and nothing else.
