New on the board ,72 vette
I just traded a 67 GTO for a 72 vette SB convertible, automatic. I used to have 69 427 convertible 4sp but some idiot ran red light and hit me 2 years ago and totaled it, so it is great to be back in the vette crowd again. I'm kind of a BB snob but I think this vette was worth more than my GTO was so it was a good deal. Jus for the record, I always figured he SB C3 would handle better than the BB, but it is more of a difference that I thought. Anyway, the previous owner put a mild street cam, elect ign, edelbrock carb and intake on it, so it is not a total dog, but still pretty weak engine compared to what I am used to. If I've got $1500 to spend to pump up HP, what do you experts out there recommend. And tranny shifts kind of soft, instead of rebuild I think I'll go for 700R4 upgrade. Anybody else done this swap on their C3. And tach is stuck on 4000 RPM, doesn't move at all. If cable went out, wouldn't it go back down to 0, so do I need a new tach. Thanks for your help!!

Welcome fellow Texan! Some guys have done the 700R4 swap as well as the 2004R. I believe that the 2004R is an easier direct swap where as the 700R4 requires some mods like cutting down the drive shaft. There are others who will chime in on that as well as your other questions. Do a search on many of your questions and you will find a wealth of info.

You no doubt have the stock 3.08 rear and you'll get more torque multiplication with the 700R4 swap since the 700 has a 3.0 something first gear while the 2004R has a 2.6 something first. 3.55 or higher rear, the 200 is the way to go but with a 3.08 you'll get a lot more off the line with the 700.
And yeah, your tach head is bad.

Be patient. Pumping up the power on one of these cars is just about the easiest thing you can do! Heads, cam, intake, carb, and exhaust are all inexpensive bolt-on candidates :yesnod:
