Wiper Door hung up on my '69
Nice day in the 50's here in Milwaukee yesterday so I rolled my '69 out for a few runs around the neighborhood.
Sat on the apron just letting it warm up a bit and "exercising" all the vacuum systems, overrides, etc. The Wiper door opened successfuly via the override twice, and then the third time wouldn't. If you look very closely, you can see it rise a bit on the passenger side ... but the driver's side seems hung up tight.
Gentle nudging with the valve open didn't let it pop either.
Any easy ideas before I break out the manuals?

Does the vacuum system operate the headlights?
What happens when you try to run the wipers?
What happens when you try to run the wipers?
Again, what is so perplexing here is that I cycled the override three times in succession (with the engine running). The first two times, the panel slid up just fine and then held fast on the third.
Is there anything that would hang it up on the drivers side specifically?

The vacuum system seems to be ok. The headlights swing up/down, and the wiper cowl worked great the first two times you used it with the override.
I worked on my wiper cowl last summer and there isn't much to the system on the driver's side other than the hinges for the cowl. Could it be something mechanical went wrong? Did the hinges bind?
Can you manually move the driver's side at all to see what is going on underneath the cowl? Can you see the hinges? Can you shoot any WD-40 on those hinges?

I was only using the vacuum override valve at the time. Thus, I suspect the wipers themselves are in the resting position under the panel.

Try pushing the rubber boot on the vacuum actuator aside and manually pushing the rod that opens your wiper door. If you can manually move this and successfully open the wiper door then you either have a bad actuator or a vacuum problem. Once the door is open, put vacuum gauge on the line to the actuator and see what you have. If you have good vacuum, then consider buying a rebuild kit for the actuator. Very easy to fix.
