4spd muncie experts=help
When I try to shift the car gets locked in reverse. with the linkage disconnected I can move shift fork into reverse, but I can also move the 3-4 fork into gear...what is up with that???? could the side cover be on wrong and the forks not right inside or what would cause this?? I adjusted rods per spec and it doesn't help  :cry help, help. I don't want to pull trans but will if needed to readjust cover... :cry help experts :D

There is no adjustment inside of the cover of a Muncie. The reverse fork is independant of the 1-2 and 3-4 forks and interlocks. So with the linkage disconnected, you are able to have reverse engaged and shift into any other gear. The only reverse lock out is in the shifter itself. From your description it sounds to me that you have a problem in the shifter, not the trans.

I have the same problem. Someone told me the rods need to be adjusted. Although, I have had luck with wiggling the rods where they connect to the shifter. There is one point where the 3 rods meet, and there is a small flat metal plate between the reverse and 3-4 rod. I lubricated this and moved it around. Seemed to have helped. It was all rusty and didnt want to move. Still gets stuck sometimes though. Just keep wiggling the shifter around eventually unsticks it for me.

Check the bushings on the shift rods, replace as needed. Then with the rods off of the shifter, insert the neutral gate gauge into the shifter. Next make sure all the shifter arms on the trans are in neutral. Now connect the shifter rods to the shifter (the neutral gate gauge should still be in the shifter) and adjust the rod lenghth as needed. Now remove the neutral gate gauge.
One last thing, check your motor and trans mounts. Because the shifter is mounted to the frame and not the trans, if the mounts are bad and the engine/trans is moving around the shifter is gonna bind up!
If the shifter is just plain worn out and sloppy, install a Hurst Competition Plus. You can even get a shift lever that looks like the stock one except the reverse lock out lever is non-functional.

Played with the linkage and got it working for a few shifts then got difficult again, will have to crawl back under and try again--I have never had such a problem every before.

I had the same problem with my car. I found that if I first put it in neutral and moved the shifter from side to side, a couple of times, the problem went away. I hope this helps.

Welcome to the reason that Hurst made so much money back then!
It's a shifter problem. What happens in the shifter is that things get loose and/or mis-aligned over time. It's possible then for the shift level to slip between the forks of the shifter and essentially into the neutral position without taking the car out of gear.
Put your hands palm-to-palm with your fingers spread apart. Imagine that the shift lever comes down between your index & middle fingers. It slides one hand forward & back, left hand for 1-2, right for 3-4. If things are lookse, the shifter can slide between your fingers into the neutral position.
When your car is in neutral, can you move the shift lever freely to the right and left without catching on any of the shift forks? All the way from 3-4 to Reverse should be smooth.

Re: 4spd muncie experts=help (ddecart)
After re-installing my trans a rod lever bolt came undone on the tranny allowing the rod to rotate on the base and it got stock in 2nd gear. I had get under the car and put the levers in neutral to sinc em up then tightened the offending bolt.
