My recent rebuild is making the dreaded rod knock sound at number 1 which was same rod brg I spun. I want to sart over and build 383 short block myself but would like to start with new block. GM crate 350 is $1200 for long block.

Get a copy of your local Auto Trader or Recycler. It will be full of ads from places selling those $600 short blocks. Call them up, tell them what you want, go visit and bring a bore gauge and CASH.
It will also give you a chance to see why those $600 Pep Boys-quality short blocks only cost $600. But you can score good blocks from those places. Sometimes you can even score good 400 blocks, too. Be prepared to spend more.

GM sell a new 350 4 bolt 2 piece seal block with PN 10066034 for right around $600.00. It is the block that was used in the target 350 motors. I have used them in race motors for the customers that don't have the budget for a Dart, Bowtie, or World blocks. I have had very good luck with those blocks up to 650hp. After that you need to use the better aftermarket blocks.

I also looked at getting a new block. Sallee Chevrolet has them for $599 plus shipping. Shipping isn't cheap and I am on the east coast while they are on the west coast. Pace also had a good price but they are way down in Texas. The block has a list price of around $840. The best any local GM shop would charge is $720. Sure is a lot of mark up on parts! I started looking about 6 weeks ago. As of now I still do not have a block to work with. Local machine shops in my area want roughly $625 for a completed block, cleaned and machined. I was hoping to spend closer to $450, but I guess I am dreaming.

Ever try Pomona swapmeet? One sunday every 6 weeks the LA fairplex has a car show and swapmeet. Last year I saw a guy selling brand new late model single piece rear seal blocks (that can use the OEM roller cams) with just stock crank and pistons (no rods) but vortec heads included for a $1000 package. Only saw that once last year but I have seen a regular used block vendor from AZ selling high tin, 4 bolt 400" blocks ($450). Take a look as your only 1 hour away.
But hey, don't throw that '69 block out! Those pre '70s blocks were thick castings and many can easily be overbored to 0.060" or even more. :yesnod:

I'd like to start with the 10066034 block, but shipping does end up being a lot.
Local GM says around $827 but Sal is 595 plus ship. Local shop says around 500 for used 4 bolt with 400 crank and line bored and tanked, but not sure I trust them after latest episode.
I'll see what PAW has.
