Default I DYNO'd my '66 327/350 today...

I did a dyno pull for the first time on my "new to me" '66 roadster. It is a numbers matching drivetrain with a "HT" 327/350 block, but the previous owner had it rebuilt to "better specs" according to him. He had lost the paperwork on it so I had no idea what was really done, but here is what I do know: angle plug 2.02 heads, forged crank (according to my mechanic), MSD ignition, 700 Holley DP, '69 Z28 intake, side exhaust (Hooker) with spiral inserts, 1.5 aluminim RR and aluminum pulleys. This is all know for sure.
Here are the numbers:

298.1 RWHP @ 5500 RPM
368.8 RWTQ @ 3750 RPM

Lines were nice and flat and it pulled level to ~6250RPM.
A/F was good and the guys were all impressed that this little mouse could lay these numbers down. With all the 327's on this forum, I thought you guys might like to know.

Edit: By the way, temp was 75F and the car was heat soaked from a 45 min drive to get there. I run at 180 degrees and use 91 octane.

Wow ! Thanks for posting. The torque number at that RPM is impressive to me. I wonder what kind of cam is in that mouse.

Great numbers - makes me wonder what my stock (rebuilt) 327/350 would turn. You mentioned that you use 91 octane. Are you concerned about detonation? What is your static and total timing? I ask because, since the stock 327 is rated at 11:1 compression, I would assume you are in that range. I've been mixing Cam II with 93 octane (5 gal of Cam II to a full tank). I could be over-doing it - just playing it safe. I might be able to run with just 93 octane.

Anybody know what this combo might dyno at? I just rebuilt it and haven't fired yet. 650 holley, 350hp intake, stock corvette ignition, 202 stock heads, flat top pistons and L-79 cam. Thanks guys

For what it's worth, I'll respond re my '68 327/350. Rebuilt bored .30 over, Xe262 cam, Hyper. pistons with 10 to 1 compression (deliberate choice on my part), totally stock double hump heads with the 2.02/1.60 valves. All else stock, including exhaust system/carb/intake etc. with 4 speed (M21 w. 3.70 rear).

Dyno 229rwhp at 5100 (power just starting to drop so no point pushing it)
277 rwtq at 3600. Good torque with more than 80% available from 2000rpm and up.

Although not totally stock, this is probably pretty close to a good baseline for a stock L79. Obviously, a lot of room to improve!!

Terrific number, But the important question, & numbers asside ,what are your 1/4 mile times & E.T. , Mph in the 1/4 = the true horsepower. :steering: :auto: :seeya :flag

When I bought the car, the previous owner said that the heads had been ported (they are the stock heads for the motor.)

The factory specs, 350Hp, were rated at the flywheel and without any accessories installed, if I'm not mistaken. Your results would indicate a 14.8% parasitic power loss, 298.1Hp at the rear wheels, assuming the engine is making 350Hp at the flywheel, which seems about right assuming a standard trans, rear end and accessories. All in all, very respectable numbers with no give up to drivability.

For a 327 your rear wheel torque is amazing!
Not sure how you could ever improve on that!

The 350 HP rating is SAE gross - no accessories, no mufflers, and corrected to standard sea level conditions. It was probably also inflated. SAE net (as installed) would be about 80 percent or 280, then apply the nominal 85 percent driveline loss and you are at about 230.

A production L-79 would probably make between 230 and 250 RWHP (corrected to "SAE conditions") on a modern inertia dyno. Good head work including multiangle valve seats will bump it up about 15-25 HP. The LT-1 cam adds another 15 with very little loss in low end torque.

FI in place of the SHP manifold and carb will add another 15-20 HP, but at the cost of low end torque because it is essentially a "tunnel ram" manifold rather than a 180 degree type, and the latter has some favorable wave dynamics than enhance low end torque.

Duke

BioRxOkC@aol.com,

WOW! Outstanding #s!! I luv it when a 327 pulls this hard. You're runnin with the LS1's. That's the beauty of an extra kick in the pants. Havin' a 40+ technology block sweetened to run with the big boys. Whoever sweetened your motor up sounds like they knew what they were doing. I too would be curious to know the cam in that 327 of yours. With that kind of performance..don't touch it, just drive and enjoy (ha listen to me). The quest to improve is always there...continuous improvement while enjoying the drive!!

I'm in the middle of converting from hydraulics to solids (makin' my 300 horse hydraulics into a 365 horse version w/solid lifters (DUKE has convinced me to go the LT1 cam route). I don't expect to get as good #s as you posted but I know she'll improve from my baseline of 230/235 rwh and 266 rwt. The decidely delicate balance I'm shooting for is driveability AND performance. Good idle quality, good cruisin' at highway speeds AND great performance when the hammer goes down are my goals.

My best at the track is 14.2's @ 98 mph. I participate each year at the Pure Stock (kind of misnomer, huh?) Muscle Car Drags. What a blast!!

Anyway, sorry to ramble on 'bout me. I really like your look as well...goes with those #s you achieved. Sweet!!

Jim

Almost 300 RWHP with the 327 .. ? .. Really impressive, needless to say .. ! .. That will definitely raise the interest level for the rest of us currently doing 327 redo's, much less the 'bar'. It would be interesting to see what the results of our forum 327 makeovers might yield in the way of hp/torque numbers, considering components used and any special 'extra' work - like head porting.

I'd certainly like to do a dyno pull too and see what numbers come up when the 327 is good and ready. Maybe we could compile a forum '327 database' if enough guys are interested.
