Re: Long & Short water pumps ? (comp)
It's the general overall shape that allows the pulley on the pump to correctly align with the belt groove on the balancer. The timing cover is also slightly different. Other SBC's use a "long" water pump. The short pump also give the Vettes a little more room..

the impeller portion of the pump is the same, even the nose I believe (but dont hold me to that) is the same....short pumps have much shorter legs, engines with short pumps for the most part have accessories that mount next to the engine, whereas long pumps will often mount the accessories in front of the motor.
You are going to want a short for your corvette, the problem with a long is numerous, fan spacing from the rad...accessory room....pully conflicts with the front crossmember (maybe)...and just plain tightness...

A word of caution here on long vs short pumps. The Vette has it's own flavor which is midway between the normal short or long Chevy pump.It also has a 3/4" pilot which is bigger than the normal pump. When I switched to billet pulleys I ran into all kinds of fitment and alignment of pully issues. If you're intention is to retain stock pulleys and brackets, stick with the correct "Corvette" pump.
Ask me how I know.

i will need spacers :banghead: :banghead: next things is can i buy :lolg:
:lolg: if i need to make steel or alum.??????? i just measure the leg length
difference to get spacer thickness? AM i on track

Re: Long & Short water pumps ? (comp)
This is from Summit:
1. Chevrolet used a short style water pump in their small block engines from 1955-68, in passenger cars, 1969-70 350 c.i.d. Corvettes and 1955-72 light duty trucks. The dimension from the block surface to the water pump hub is 5-5/8". With a 5/8" pilot shaft.
2. The long water pump has been used on small blocks from 1969-87 passenger cars and 1973-86 light duty trucks. The dimension from the block to the hub is 6-15/16". The pilot shaft is 5/8".
Exception! The Corvette from 1971-82 came with a short pump, but the pilot shaft was larger, it measures 3/4".
You have to watch mixing and matching. Water pump, alternator, and crankshaft pulley alignment is critical.
One last tip! If you can get your hand down between the pump and the block, it's a long pump. Don't do it when it's hot!
