600 hp on a stock Eaton is pushing it. You can rebuild it to take the power but I wouldn't be dumping the clutch with a 30 year old stock unit.
To rebuild one for HD use you need to go with some new gears, treated 10-17 posi gears, solid clutches, steel bearing caps with 1/2 bolts, treated yokes, maybe even shoe horn a 12 bolt in there. Look for about $1,000 if you do it yourself or about $2,500 from Tom's.

W/a fresh rebuild and new gears your rear should hold the 600HP. When you start jumping up another 150-200HP I would than seriously consider running the 30 spline kit. Here's a pic

Your rear end will last as long as you don't dump the clutch, mine is one year older than yours, and lot more engine, rear end is just fine....

Re: How strong is 69 rearend (GDaina)
I have a 454 with about 650hp(all motor). The rear end was the only thing that has'nt broken yet. I took it to the drag strip and broke the driveshaft and the trans, but not the rear end. I have a Tom's 12 bolt on the way that i had bought from a forum member. I thought may as well get something stronger before we brake something back there.

How lucky do you feel??? Do you trailer your car to the track or do you have to rely on it to get you back home?
Do yourself a favor and buy the HD parts from "Van Steel" or "Tom's Differentials"...it will save you a lot of grief.

Are you still running your stock driveshaft and pinion yoke? You can get a 1350 pinion yoke that will be stronger. The only downfall is that you need to get a 1" shorter driveshaft. But it will hold a lot more HP.

Van Steel,
I had a 3" drive shaft custome made withe heavy duty yoks. The 12 bolt will have a 30 pinion yoke. Now that the trans has been rebuilt and a 12 bolt rear end i am not sure what will be next... Thanks
