Default edelbrock performer-plus cam

hey guys!!, i have a 78 L-48 that i am going to put true dual exhaust and a performer intake manifold on. is it worth my time to put in the matching performer plus cam shaft? and does that cam produce enough low rpm vacuum for everything to work right? thanks

cam Specifications:
* Advertised duration: 278 intake/288 exhaust
* Duration at .050 in.: 204 intake/214 exhaust
* Gross valve lift: 420 in. intake/442 in. exhaust
* Lobe separation: 112 degrees
* RPM range: Idle to 5,500
* Designed for optimum torque from low end to the mid range. Smooth idle for daily driven vehicles.

Step up to the next cam but get a Summit brand:

Specifications:
* Advertised duration: 272 intake/282 exhaust
* Duration at .050 in. cam lift: 214 intake/224 exhaust
* Gross valve lift: .442 in. intake/.465 in. exhaust
* Lobe separation: 112 degrees
* RPM range: 2,000 to 4,500
* Good idle quality

I am running it right now it a 383 stroker and will prolly transplant it into a 350 tpi eng. Don't let the rpm range fool you, it will out run the one you posted sicne the durations are 10 deg longer on each side, no problems with vac level or stock torq conv either.

:iagree: ....this sounds reasonable to me plus you'll save money with Summit parts. ;)

Nothing wrong with that Performer cam rcast. I don't imagine any vacuum problems. But are you up to a much bigger job?
Let me list what needs to be removed and replaced:
-carb, distributor and intake (valve covers too)
-fan belts
-fan clutch and fan
-water pump & pulleys
-radiator which requires R&R headlight actuators to clear core support
-possibly fuel pump and pump rod
-crank pulleys
-harmonic dampner
-steering cross bar (between idler arms)
-starter
-oil pan (because you have to clear the lip seal on timing cover and will bust oil pan seal)
-timing gear cover and timing gears
-camshaft
Now replace everything you took off plus all those 25 year old parts that are broken in the process. :lol: :rofl:

I ran that cam in my car when it had the original small block in it. It is a very mild cam that will produce good low and mid range torque. You will have vaccum levels that are not to far from stock and a smooth idal with just a slight hint of overlap. My reccomendation would be to step the cam up another notch.

The Performer intake falls flat beyond 5K rpm. With that cam, go with the rpm manifold.
BTW, summit will sell you a cam with exactly the same grind for less money. Have run their cams in several engines with no problems.

Not enough cam for a Corvette. You need to state trans. & gears for cam.

Car has a 350 turbo tranny and a 3.55 rear. i don't want to go very big on cam at all because engine only has 8.2 -1 comp ratio, and i don't want to over stress old parts. i will never take this motor any higher than 5500 rpms. I am just looking to wake up what i have right now. i am going to buy a new motor next year... i also went with the performer intake due to hood clearance issues. anyother help would be great. thanks guys

i will probablly get the zz4 crate from GM, for the buck seems like the best buy. dual exhaust is on the way i will be running stock manifolds into a 2.5 in true dual system with magnaflow mufflers. i may upgrade to headers at a later date, but with the motor that is in the car the boost in power would be very minimal.

The Performer and most other Edelbrock cams can be purchased through Melling engine parts at a local machine shop for way less money due to no re-packaging/advertising costs. We ran a Cam Doctor plot on the Edelbrock a customer bought and a $70 Melling cam, besides the casting and serial numbers confirming the cam was one and the same the Cam Doctor print out confirmed it (the Cam Doctor is a sophisticated measuring device and software program the will calculate max velocities and spring requirements for racing camshafts.) The Summit Cam is a Melling or Wolverine brand cam. Get a Comp Cam for performance they aren't that much more expensive!

Comp Cams HE260H is a good min. & works w/ stock valve springs. Also Comp Cams XE-256. Peak power about 5000 & all done by 5500.
