Default Stupid Alternator Question

I think this is just a coincidence but: Picked up a rebuilt Alt at the local parts store, voltmeter on dash would read 9vt until you reved it a little then it would jump to 13-14vts but battery kept going dead, assumed bad regulator so I took it back and they replaced it, put it on and it worked great for about 20 miles, then it started over charging, like 18-19vts, now its back to 9vts and the battery is dead. About to take it back down to the parts store but thought I would check with you guys to make sure I am not overlooking something that might be killing the alternator/regulator.

Where are you getting these alternators? At some places, "rebuild" means fixing whatever's wrong, cleaning up the alternator, and putting it in a box.

Also, have you checked for a short circuit?
