My first post and of course my first question
Hello guys and gals. Ive been lurking for a while and thought it was about time I said hello...so hello. I just bought a 70 LS5 coupe back in Dec. and have began the process of rebuilding everything. My plan is to build a good handling and somewhat fast driver without butchering the car. I have started in the the back by rebuilding the diff (fact 3.70) , new offset trailing arms, complete VBP performance plus suspension kit which I am in the process of putting on. I have also placed my order for the new Keisler 5-speed kit with the 2.87 first and .64 fifth. I am going to set the original LS-5 and muncie aside so I can enjoy the car and not have to worry about breaking the original drive train. I have not decided on an engine yet but leaning towards the ZZ502 . Oh yea , about forgot about my question. I am in the process of installing the diff crossmember with new bushings and cannot get it to go all the way up into the pockets, I am using the re-inforcing kit (aluminum discs)and it will not pull all the way up...im afraid of stripping the studs. So what am I doing wrong? Thanks, Mike

Re: My first post and of course my first question (TNBUSA)
First off,
Welcome to the single greatest use of the internet known to mankind
I just put my differential crossmember back on a couple weeks ago. I didn't use any aluminum spacers, though. Mine snugged right up. How thick are the spacers? Spacers go on the outside of the bushing, so it really shouldn't matter.... Good news is there will soon be many more posts here with suggestions!
Sounds like you're building a powerful machine!!!

Thanks for the welcome. Kenko the disc go on the bottom of the crossmember not between the frame and crossmember, I had a heck of a time getting the crossmember bushings loose when I removed it. I installed new bushing because I messed up the originals. The problem now is the bushings will not go all the way into the saddle it need to go about 1/8th inch.

Hey neighbor. Welcome to the forum. Good to see another 70 on here. We will have to hook up and do some cruising around ET. I really wish I could offer you some good advice on the aluminum disc but that is just about the only thing on my 70 that I have not had off at this point. I know several on here have done this job. Red73 is the first one that comes to mind. Hopefully he will chime in for you.

Re: My first post and of course my first question (TNBUSA)
I installed mine a couple of weeks ago. I was also concerened about getting it all the way on, so I measured the depth of the bushing socket (from the bottom of the socket to the top of the cross-member flange, not the top of the socket). I then measured the height of the support ball. When you subtract the depth of the bushing from the height of the ball you will get the distance between the top of the cross-member flange to the bottom of the support when the ball hits the bottom of the socket. When you install the cross-member check this distance to make sure the ball is in contact with the bottom of the bushing.
There is a gap of about 1/8" between the bottom of the support and the top of the cross-member.
Only tighten the nut to the torque specifications.
Welcome to the forum.
David

Re: My first post and of course my first question (GATOR454)
hey everyone! thanks for the welcome! I am a bit computer illiterate....I don't know how to post pics, but will attempt to figure it out.
thanks to gator for the info. that was exactly what I was looking for. I do have 1/8 inch gap, so I guess I'm okay
hey eddie70! we'll have to get together when I get mine going. Stop by Auto Zone in Oak Ridge. I am the manager.....which means I am there most of the time!
later,
Mike
