can't figure out what rear end my 68 has??
I'm getting ready to start fixing up my corvette and I'm trying to figure out what parts are original and which aren't, and I'm having trouble with some of the numbers. The numbers on the rear end are 2FB 2 6 68 W. These numbers do not match any of my corvette rear end identification codes. Also the specs I have on '68 vettes shows the front sway bar measures 1.125" in diameter, but mine measures just a shade under 1". Could this be original or has it been replaced with the wrong part? Any help would be so very very appreciated. I am totally new to corvettes so don't assume I know anything, and all info is helpful at this point. thanks!

Don't know about the part #s but if you want to know what ratio you have, try this. With the back end of the car up on stands, trans in neutral, put a chaulk mark on one rear tire and a chaulk mark on the drive shaft. Rotate the tire one revolution and count the revolutions of the drive shaft, estimate the final partial revolution of the shaft. Now look up what ratios where available and what casting #s etc. went with that ratio. Sort of a reverse search.
As far as the rest, hey it's a 35+ year old Vette, how many owners and how many mods has this car been through? If only our cars could talk!

Because back then that was "IT'S COOL, IT'S WOW, IT'S NOW!!
Also there was probably some drugs and alcohol involved. I'll bet if you stripped away a layer or two of paint you'd find some shade of turquoise with 1/4" flake in it.

You can always elevate the rear end, mark your driveshaft to the differential, rotate the rear wheels and count the number the drive shaft rotates to one revolution of the rear wheel....in your case the drive shaft should rotate 4.1 time...indicating 4:11 gears, or if the driveshaft rotates 4.5 times, that would indicate 4.56 gears
Edit: Oops...Geezer already said that....this is the only way to know what gears you have, short of pulling the cover and counting the # of teeth on the ring and pinion
