Can't start my newly rebuilt motor
Granted it sat for about a year, but today my brother and I figured its time . It cranks but no fire. we pulled plugs and they do not spark, checked wires, voltage, coil, grounds, module, pickup coil, advance, proper position of distributor changed pickup coil and module, still no spark, it cranks like hell but ........ any and all suggestions welcomed,oh also the ignition fuse is fine. :banghead:

Re: Can't start my newly rebuilt motor (john V. zemba)
ignition timing...distributor could be 180 off, maybe cam timing off...
oops u said distributor is in correct position...maybe, best way to install distributor is to put comp gague in #1 cyl, rotate the crank, needle will move when piston is on TDC...and time to put in the distributor.

brought #1 piston to tdc, the old finger on the hole routine, motor doesn't backfire it just cranks.

Check for power to the coil both when cranking and when in the run position.
Since there's no spark, chase the voltage to the coil. If it's good, check that the distributor is triggering properly.

If you don't have spark it won't matter which way the dist is in. If there is power to the coil and still no spark then change the coil.

Re: Can't start my newly rebuilt motor (72rdstr)
voltage checked a little over 12 volts does that sound right, i checked it at the lead going in to the end of dist. again what is triggering.

Re: Can't start my newly rebuilt motor (john V. zemba)
I had experienced this past December when I attempted to start an engine I rebuilt TWO years ago. I installed the distributor and it just cranked. But no start. I turned my engine by hand and installed the distributor and it fired up (it scared me because I also took many tries before I got it right) You can try this if you wish. I have a 79.
Remove distributor. Place a mark on the body of the distrubutor where the #1 terminal is on the cap. (If you are sure the distributor is installed correctly skip removing distributor, the engine can be turned with the distributor in the block. The spark plugs do not have to be removed either.)
Remove LH valve cover, spark plugs, fan, and drive belts. (you will have more room to turn engine by hand)
Turn engine by hand using a 5/8" socket and breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt. (there is enough room between the fan shroud and water pump to do this)
Turn engine until the mark on the harmonic balancer lines up with the 0 on the timing tab. (while turning engine watch the rocker arms on the #1 cylinder, #1 at TDC on the compression stroke is indicated by both springs are not under tension)
Take distributor rotor and turn it so the metal portion of the rotor is aligned with the mark that was placed on the distributor body. Install distributor. (It should drop in but it takes some pratice to get it right) Secure distributor hold
down bracket.
Install cap on distributor and tighten down Install BAT and TACH wires to coil
(pink wire is BAT and beige wire is TACH)
Install fan, plugs, wires, drive belts and valve cover.
Fire it up. (it should start) Adjust timing.
