Hey guys...

I'm working on the 355 rebuild, and I'm wondering about Summit racings brand of cams and lifters! I've heard that everyone uses the same blanks for the cam before grinding... and that on alot of summits parts they pull them out of a name brand box and drop them into theirs!

Anyone running summits house brand of cams lifters rockers etc?

If not summit, then who would you recomend? Thanks :cheers:

I have a summit 302.312 cam. It made my 406 run way better than the Comp cam I replaced it with.

I had Summit full roller rockers on my last engine and liked them so I bought a set for my new engine. :thumbs:

Summit uses Crane for a lot of their private label cams and components. No problem here with any of their products.

At one time, I think that SUMMIT-brand cams were ground by GENERAL KINETICS, who were good-enough for Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins, of Pro Stock fame...

I have run 2 summit cams with no problems, not sure if there is any diff between them and other brand name cams but I doubt you could tell from the driver seat. I buy their stuff when if fits my needs since it usually a few bucks cheaper.

I just bought one of their cam kits for my C4. I'm in the midst of an install, so I can't yet comment on the quality. But I'm glad you asked the question, as I was wondering the same exact thing. The prices can't be beat. And as with others, I have all the stickers I need.

I'm curious if the Summit Cams are older grinds from major manufacturer? You can always call Summit and ask..not sure they will tell you. The other question I would have is are they single or dual pattern cam? Based on observations of pricing in the catalog, looks like single pattern cams are less expensive. Of coarse that begs the question of which is better single or dual pattern :confused:

Dual patern is better from what I understand... it lets you optomise both the intake and exhaust... giving a few more horsepower!

I also thought dual pattern is better, but I just read an article, can't remember where, stating that there is a shift back to single pattern cams due to better efficiency of modern heads. I'll try to find the article.

I've heard some of the same stuff...

Where they are some heads out and about that are nearly as efficent for both intake and exhaust... But you can change the rpm that the power comes in with a dual pattern by tuning the exhaust or intake for a particular rpm

I'd love to have an engine that you could run a single pattern and achieve top performance across the charts... but at the moment I've got 882 76cc heads :blueangel:

Seems the cam manufactures went to the dual pattern cam because of the week exhaust flow of the heads plus the restictive exhaust that where being installed on cars.

i bought a generic cheepie from the ads in chev hi po.

has about 40k miles and no troubles. The cam was about 45 bucks.

I'm fooling around with desk top dyno (demo :D ) to see which one might work out best for my combo...

If anyone else has some free time and wants to fool around with it...

I'm thinking:

Stock 882's
Felpros steel shim headgasket .015 compressed 4.1 bore
Flat top pistons (should be .025 down from the top of the bore... havent installed em yet!) If anyone knows how to find that out they are part number (summit) TRW-L2256F30
A stock intake... for now... unless I can convince a friend that his spare needs a new home :blueangel:
Stock Qjet (it'll get tuned when the motors ready to rock and roll)
Hooker sidepipes not sure on the mufflers yet!

Then for the valvetrain I'm on the edge as to whether or not I want to upgrade to 1.6:1 rockers, I've heard that for some people they dont present any problems... and it would let me run a shorter duration cam advanced a good bit while still retaining lift!

And the cam! I've heard the 268h is excellent... and that the extreme energy high ramp speed deals are even nicer, I just dont see with my current setup the need to throw to much more cash at it (lifters dont come in the 100 dollar setup... and they dont warranty their parts unless you run their brand!)

Would chevy vortec heads with upgraded z-28 springs be a good candidate for single pattern cam?
