Default Rear End Rebuild Update

Just got done putting the trailing arms back in the vette. Went with the VBP poly bushings on the arms and strut rods. Replaced all the seals on the differential while I was at it as the saying goes. Good news was nothing was worn in the differential. Want to thank the forum for all the helpfull hints I found in the Archives. That was a great place to to start looking at the beginning of this project.

Thanks

Nice job Pete, did you give the differential a good inspection?

Pretty good, no abnormal wear and backlash was still good. Car does not have that many miles, but the rubber is wearing out

Question:

You can reseal the pumpkin completely - all three seals, WITHOUT doing a major teardown, right?

Just take off the pinion gear driveshaft flange (probably ALOT of torque required!) and the snap rings on the yokes - if they're there. I've seen non-snap ring yokes, too,

thanks

Yes I removed the yoke flage with an impact wrench, it came right off. Remember to mark the position of the flange and nut to the housing before you loosen it. You will also need to get a torque reading on the preload on the bearing. This can be done with a dial torque wrench or with a fish scale and a length of heavy twine. Then I just popped out the old seal and put in the new. I then tightened the nut until there was no movement on the washer and the marks line up. Then you tighten 1/8 turn at a time until you have a preload of 1 to 4 pounds more that original (instructions from Chiltons for 68 to 82 Vette). The side yoke seals you remove the the snap rings take out the side yoke and remove and replace the seal, put yokes and snap rings back in.

All and all it was not that difficult of a job
