You'll get a thousand and one opinions on this, like asking what beer is best.
Just use a brand name oil, change it fairly often and the motor and transmission will outlive you and the car. 10W30 is fine. The engineers at GM that spent decades designing the engine were not idiots.
When the must-use-synthetics guys jump into this thread, ask them for hard proof of any engine that lasted longer because of the synthetic oils.

It would depend upon the condition of the engine. If it is like new I would run a synth, like Mobil 1. That is what I have in my '73 LS4. But if it is a worn engine just use any good brand name oil.

As for brand name oils, I'd stay away from Quaker State...I used some of their 10W-30 for higher mileage engines & I noticed smoke coming out of the exhaust right after...I sent them an email asking questions & never got a reply. I've also read other posts claiming QS oil contributes to or causes sludge inside the engine due to the fact that is it a wax based oil (I'm not up on all the details).
I run regular Castrol 10W-30 now...I'm happy. :)

I use Castrol, Valvoline or Napa brand - regular dino (non-syn) oil.
10W-40 year-round. For the first 3000 miles on a new motor, I will also add a quart of GM E.O.S. AC PF 35L filter too.
For the trans & diff, I use the above dino brands - GL-5 grade. I also use the GM posi lube additive in the diff.
I don't use synthetic :nono: because I had problems with it in my other car. Most guys have no trouble with it tho.
