Get ready for a career in polishing. First you are gonna need a Porter Cable polisher. There are others on the market but this is the best I've used. You can see it on the Meguiars site but you can get it elsewhere cheaper. Then become friends with 3M Swirl and haze remover for dark colors. you will end up using this with the Porter Cable at least twice a year to get rid of the haze in the paint caused by abrasive dust and such. After you go over the car with 3M S&HR you need to protect the finish with your choice of wax or polish. Always use a wax or polish with no abrasives or you'll just be taking a step back to the swirl and haze remover. I've used many over the years and I find that the longest lasting is Zaino. There are other good ones out there but Zaino is my pic. The good news is when your done it will look like this. Good luck.

Yup, that's what I do. And because I don't have a power polisher (plus, I'm kinda chicken to try it on my car), I take it to a detailer 1-2 times per year to have the paint buffed.

Haven't noticed anyone mention washing their Vette. I wash my Black '80 quite a bit using water, from the hose, and a sponge. I dry it with a wrung out sponge and flannel. I will, on occasion, use a detergent on tar spots. It's the original paint and still looks pretty dang good. Although, I do hope to have her painted next year ($$ permitting). Black, of course!

Lots of good advise on this one. For me using a blower attachment on an air compressor to remove dust seems to scratch the paint less than using a duster. I always hand wash with concentrate car wash using one mitt glove for the body and one mitt glove for the wheels. I never take it to a high pressure car wash and NEVER drive it through one of those car washes with the blue scrubber / paint destroying automatic brushes. Its like taking sandpaper to your clearcoat. I like to wax every 3 months with Meguires. You can buy a few cheap tooth brushes and sponges on a stick that really help remove excess wax from seems and around edges. Other than that I am not a Zaino afficionado but people sure seem to swear by it. Hope this helps.

This is actually a really good question.... I too just had a mercedes black $6500 job done on my 68 vert last summer. I swear to god I have not put one scratch on that car, but it has been to several places for final restoration- motor install, bright work, etc.... and even though I have not driven it yet except to those places (and left with them), the car is full of swirls and really small clearcoat scratches...just unavoidable, i guess. No one treats your car like you do. REALLY NOW you are a perfection freak like me, silver might be a better color for you, I just cry when I see my paint. I imagine a good professional buffing would take care of all the mico scratches, but that is to be seen. As far as cleaning and waxing, I use only the very SOFTEST microfiber rags and Mcguires wax.
Dont trust shammies and the "Absorber" that some people recommend...NOT for black paint.

Love my black, but would have done it in silver had I known. Sorry for any spelling and typos (TYPING VERY FAST)

Mine has been at the paint shop a few days; about 103 so far. Picking it up next week and black was my choice of color.

I saw it today with the chrome bumpers and sidepipes and know I made the right decision.

Gonna use Z5 and Microfiber towels.

Sure, but the pic does not do it justice- the resolution is not there. I have been told that my paint is the best anyone has seen, like it was dipped in chocolate, won 2 trophies out of 3 shows last summer. Email me off line and ill get you the paint code it was a dupont somthing......

I'll second the California Duster. I keep mine in the C5 and have even used it in parking lots! :yesnod:
