I went to see my vette tonight at the painters. He called and said that there was a problem area he wanted me to see and need direction on how to fix it.
When I was removing the paint in my garage, I used a razor blade. The whole car went smoothly until the DS front fender. At this point the paint just came off as quick as I could push the razor blade and came in big sheets. So I stopped because I thought something was wrong. I guessed I would let him take care of it. It turns out when he got into the sanding and final removing of the paint, some kind of oily residue is making its way through the fiberglass on this fender. Nothing is gonna stick to this obviously. What to do now? Any ideas.

I took a few pics of what I saw tonight. It is all over the fender top and sides. You can see the dark spots. Argghhh!!!

He gave a few ideas. But all hurt my feelings. At this point there is no turning back. It is either new front clip or partial clip.

Nothing ever goes easy, huh? Talk about some bad luck. What does the painter think the oily stuff is? :confused:

i had the same problem with that 68 i painted,it was from all the spray the guy was using on the door linkage and windows,it soaked right into it.I ended up using dupont velvaseal on it and it fixed it.Never had a problem again on that door.

I don't think you will have to buy any new fiberglass. You CAN get that stuff out, whatever it is. This months (May issue) Corvette Fever has a reply to a question about laquer thinner bleeding throgh in the same area as your problem. It is on page 94 in the Resto Clinic section. I would scan it for you and email it but my scanner is dead. The procedure requires you to put a layer of gelcoat on which is a PITA, but it's cheaper than buying a panel. Get the mag and read the reply, it is long but helpfull.

I believe this oil seepage is actually kinda common on vettes that have been converted to silicon brake fluid. If your cap leaks ( they all do a little ), the inner fender fiberglass absorbs it.

Are you using silicon ( DOT 5 ) brake fluid??

I know I've read about this here and other boards.

I am using regular DOT 3 brake fluid in mine. Could be brake fluid that has leaked through from an older master cylinder. This one doesn't leak, right now.

I have a customer that painted a Vette hood that was saturated with oil. They put it in their paint booth and left it there for several weeks which meant it got baked with all of the cars that were painted during that time. They also would wash it down with wax and grease remover (Prepsol) several times a day while they were wiping the car they were about to paint. This drew out the oil and they successfully got the paint to adhere. A lot of work but still easier than new parts. Craig
