Default Is a straight cut gear tranny gonna be too loud?

Just bought a straight cut gear 5 spd. The cool thing is I will be able to downshift without using the clutch, but on a scale from 1 to unbearable, how much noise will it make?

Its been a long time since I have driven an old "Rockcrusher". I do remember it being fairly noisy and annoying. I couldn't hear Jimi Hendrix without cranking the 8 track up. :)

To each his own, but why does not using the clutch count as "cool"? Just curious.

and the straight cut gears are going to be noisier that a rockcrushers gears. The M22 still had, I believe a 22 degree gear angle.

Hmmmmm......you could be right. I thought they were straight cut. Doesn't matter, it was worn out. That's probably why it was so noisy.

On a scale of 1 to unbearable, it would be about a 7.

Which one did you get? I just installed a G-Force 5 speed in mine last weekend. The GF5R version. It has straight cut gears and dog ring sliders.

I know when I spec'd mine, there are a gazzillion different gear sets available and varying degrees of noise. They are all somewhat noisy...just some more than others.

I was running a Doug Nash 5 speed in it previously with the 22* rock crusher gear angle.

The new one *IS* noisier, but not too bad to me. Sounds cool! The noise is in the first 4 gears, but in 5th (1 to 1) it is dead quiet. That was my biggest concern. I wanted to be able to hear radio on highway. No problem!

Plus it shifts fantastic at 7000 rpm!

Anyone can get away with bad shifts if the trans has synchros. Matching gears to rpms with a non synchro trans takes skill. If you don't do it right, the whole world hears the grinding noise and knows you blew it. To shift smoothly up and down the gears without the aid of synchros is as much or more a point of pride as it is a racing benefit. I am impressed when I see (hear) it done well.

Your sig shows a c-130. As a pilot, I am sure you are equally impressed with pilots that can fly complex aircraft well without various assist devices. Same kind of thing.

Chuck
