Argh! How do I get a hole started on the hinge pin?
I end up flattening nails trying to make a guide hole to drill out for the cotter pin. The drill bit won't center. Any ideas?

Yes you have to grind a flat. It is case hardened and when you grind, it will go thru the hardened part. Put in vise and drill. It worked for me. Good luck

Thanks for the help, guys. I did flatten it down but could never get the drill bit to stay centered...

Use a vise and a drill press.

....Probably not much more that a couple of bucks at the local hardware for a center punch. I just picked up a "self actuating" punch at Harbor Freight for $3. I't cool! You just push down on the handle far enough to make it click and it makes a nice divit that you can use to start your drill bit.
