Launching and wheel hop?
Whenever I try and launch my car now I seem to be getting what I can only describe as wheel hop. The rear wheels seem to be bouncing up and down rather then spinning. Anyone have any idea wheat might be causing that? Or how I can stop it? I know when I swapped trannies my new 3.2 first gear gives me tons of takeoff power but shouldn't my tires be spinning rather then bouncing around? Could it be my rear swaybar or maybe teh longer bolts I put in to lower the rear? Any advice would be appreciated.

My guess is that your shocks may be worn ?!?
It sounds like the car is trying to 'squat' but then bounces up causing this wheel hop problem. Shorter bolts on the leaf would help since it would 'tighten' the spring a little making it bounce less.
Also, did you use street tires or slicks ?

Re: Launching and wheel hop? (verskel)
Thanks for the reply. Well the shocks were new three years ago (KYB gas shocks) I'm not sure how long they last. I do have long bolts to lower the rear end I think I still have the original bolts somewhere. I am using street tires.

I had the problem and then it mysteriously went away. I never tried either of the items I mentioned in this thread: (See if there is any helpful info there)

Also, do a search on archived topics in C3 and in Drag Racing. :) MJ
(I just re-read the old linked topic. There were some very good replies in there!
 )

It would be a good experiment just to see if your wheel-hop goes away with street slicks.
I'm thinking that your car is making enough power to 'dip' the rear-end then it's coming up too fast with little to no traction from your radials. Did your car hop once or twice or several times off the line ?!?
My '68 was used for drag racing several years ago.
Two things were done to it :
#1 - They (previous owners) ditched the rear sway bar
#2 - Added a "drag bar" which ties the diff. to the trans. bracket / frame.
It's possible that just simply removing your sway bar would help.
You might also check for wear on your diff. bushing which could "buck" under heavy torque & load transfer (i.e. - popping the clutch).

Re: Launching and wheel hop? (MNJack)
Thanks MNJack interesting thread. Seems some people have it and others don't. It wasn't an issue with my 4 speed but it is now with the tremec. I rebuilt all the rear suspension a few years ago I'm not sure of the life expectancy of the components. I'll recheck the suspension back there and see if theres anything a miss.

Re: Launching and wheel hop? (verskel)
Verskel,
It hops many times. The tires I have a hi performance zr rated tires. i don't know if that makes a difference.
Well the differential bushing is the original one thats one component I did not replace. I think I'll remove the sway bar first and see what happens if that doesn't work I'll use the shorter stock bolts and see if that fixes it. I should probably replace the stock diff bushing either way.

I have it with my Muncie trans a lot when racing. I have now changed to a Tremec but have not driven it yet. I have new shocks and a glass rear spring. My sway bar is also hooked up. I'll have tor try and launch hard with the Tremc and see what happens.

Re: Launching and wheel hop? (verskel)
I have the day off tomorrow. Weather permitting I'll try to remove the sway bar and go back to the stock bolts. I'll report back what I find.

I've experienced this with brand new Carerra shocks. I also have the rear swaybar mounted & have had wheel hop with both the 4spd & Tremec TKO.

Have you tried removing your swaybar? f I'm getting wheel hop with my wussy motor I can't imagine trying to get traction with an EFI 388.

Re: Launching and wheel hop? (TTop Tony)
I'd go after the front diff bushing. You might try going to a urethane bushing for increased stiffness. The rubber one may be allowing the differential to "climb" a bit under torque and then unload. Also check the condition of the shocks.
...Another crazy suggestion: Lower the tire pressure in your rear tires. This will tend to dampen any vibrations within the tire itself that are interacting with your suspension. It will also increase the contact patch and should improve traction to a point as well.
