C3 Rear Spindle Removal? Need help!
I have a broken lug on the driver side rear wheel. I have removed the caliper and the rotor. I would like to remove the spindle to R&R the broken lug. The manuals that I have speak only to removing the entire rear suspension assembly. If possible, I would like to only remove the spindle.
Is it necesary to disconnect the spring and strut rod to drop the driveshaft axle enough to get at the spindle nut?
After I have removed the spindle nut, can I simply pull out the spindle, R&R the lug and re-insert the spindle or do I have to mess around with bearings?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

Much easier to cut off the lug, drive it through and replace it without removing anything. This can be done if you use a lug that is slightly shorter. It will make no difference with stock wheels.

The spindle isn't that easy to remove. It is pressed onto the bearings so it is going to require a slidehammer or press of some sort to remove the spindle. (I use a slidehammer that I built myself) Then to put it back in you will need to set the bearings back up with a set up tool and have a spindle installation tool to get the spindle back in. To just replace the stud I would try whatever other method to get one in there before going through all that comes with spindle removal.

I replaced all 10 of my studs with 3 inch long 1/2 upgraded studs on the car.
I do not run backing plates. The studs can be hammer out one at a time at the 9 oclock position on the drivers side and the 3 oclock on the passengers side.
Without the backing plate there is room to remove/replace the studs.
In my case I made a jig to guide a drill bit and after removing the stud drilled and replace it with a bigger longer stud.
A little work with tin snips in this area will allow stud removal/replacement.

I used this when replacing rear wheel bearings on my 81. There is also an installation tool, and a bearing setup tool. Made cake of the job.
