After watching some of these custom car TV shows do you feel like...
..you over do things. I don't have a show car, but just doing the smallest projects end up in major ordeals. Sanding, scrubing, painting, and then do it over a again till I feel it's perfect. I watch this shows on tv and the've got 20 year old kids building $100,000+ cars, a man beating a metal fender on a log, and those chopper guys making bikes out of scrape metal bar. Maybe I need to just step back and enjoy things more.

Those guys have a job, and thats just to do those kind of things, and they do it all the time so they got some experience. The big diff is their not building it for themselves but for a rich customer, your building your own car, you have to have it perfect, sit back and enjoy it more.

One thing I notice is that they artificially create stress to make the show more interesting. When it comes to creating stress they should post a warning, "DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME". Enjoy that beautfut vet you have!

The "create stress thing" really sucks on some of the new shows. The whole show is just lame. Taking some guys car and remaking it in 30 minutes. Ponytail man raising a stink over putting General Lee stripes on it. That show sucks whatever it is. :U

They are also usually using all new parts instead of reconditioning old parts. They also usually have specialists for certain parts of the car. And, they usually have a few people working together. I know I lose motivation alot of the time, because I am so **** about everything. It is taking me forever to work on my car-it's been a couple of months since I've even touched it. Keep being a perfectionist-it will pay off.

I got a laugh out of that.
The man has a shop and equipment worth several million, and there he is beating a piece of metal on a old log. :smash:

On most of the build it up shows, they're always in a rush and on a deadline to meet some show or event. Don't they plan ahead.
I'd like to see the price tag on some of the cars and bikes they generate. I know my '70 is costing me a small working man's fortune. :D Sometimes those shows depress me, I know mine will never look that nice. I just don't have the money or time. :(

What I appreciate about some of the shows is that they show the mistakes being made. Bolts not lining up, installing a wrong part, etc. Compared to the home improvement and older shows who only showed everything working perfectly. They made me feel like a real idiot because nothing I do seems to go perfectly the first time.

It bothers me how quick they fix all the problems though. Like tapping a new thread for instance. They just fix it & they're on their way again.
Something like turns into an all day event for me involving lots of cursing and follow-on problems...

Those TV shows don't interest me in-the-least...they are, as Dale Earnhardt remarked about the Ford Taurus when NASCAR allowed them to 'build' a 2-door version for racing, "Fabercated".
Trained-professionals, in fully-stocked garages, getting brand-new pieces FREE (for the sponsors advertisement!), never re-building pieces, and there is really no "goal" for the shop to achieve;
it's JUST a 'Show Car'!!!
I think the "NBS 24/7", detailing a Busch Series team week-by-week, is much better; they HAVE to produce & compete!

Those shows are non reality. Most of the cars cant get out of there own way. They never show all the people working behind the scene plus everything has already been trial fitted and done before we see it, you think those vendors want us to see how all there bolt ons really fit. What we do is real. Trial and error and creativity.I like beautiful cars as much as anybody, and I can tell you making them pretty is easier than making them fast and doing both is next to impossible for very long if you ever drive them.

Are you guys trying to say guys like Boyd, Troy Trepanier, Scotts rods, Roy Brizio etc.. don't know how to build cars or fast cars?

Now don't get me wrong I understand for alot of us comparable projects for our cars just aren't "in the budget" but still you have to respect their work.

I went to the Autorama, in Detroit, last weekend... talk about overdone, 700 street rods, customs and cycles, all beautiful but most cost in excess of 100k to build. But I must admit, I sure admire the quality and workmanship.
