Newbie in need of education...
Although I have previously owned an '88 convertible and a '94 convertible, I know next to nothing about Corvettes. I currently own 2 vintage Mustangs and two vintage Cougars. I'm planning to sell my '69 Mustang convertible and replace it with a '68-72 Corvette convertible. Problem is, I have no idea what to look for.
I know that I don't want a big-block, although that bias may reflect my Ford experience (Ford big blocks are substantially heavier and don't lend themselves well to carving up two-lane
I also don't know what options go together. Ideally, I'd like a 4-speed car with power steering and brakes but don't know if that was an available combination.
Finally, I have no clue what to look for on these cars as possible trouble spots. I read a post on this forum a few days ago that referenced "birdcage" as a trouble spot, but I've never heard that term before.
Any and all education is gratefully accepted and appreciated.

you can get any combination you want.. depending on the size of your wallet.
as for the birdcage, its the metal frame that supports the interior and windshield frame.
It is common for these cages to rot out. Also look for rot on the frame before the rear tires. If you need help looking over any cars, I'll be glad to lend a hand.. neighbor

the 4 speed, power brakes and power steering combination was in a lot of cars. the "birdcage" is a steal cage that goes from the cowl of the car to behind the seats to give support to the door and car. they mainly rust around the windshield where the water came in. some more spots to look for is frame rust. and what type of car do you want a driver car, a restored car, or a car to restoer. :chevy

Re: Newbie in need of education... (Corz)
Corz and Nowhere Man,
I'm looking for a solid #2 car that doesn't need much done to it. I've done 5 projects over the past 10 years, with 4 of those in the past three. I have one more waiting its turn. So I'm looking for something I can drive and enjoy right away. Basically, a no-excuses car but not a concours trailer queen.
My budget is probably going to be in the mid- to high-twenties, max.

If you want, you can attend a vette tech class I'm running for our club on Wed Night in New Haven. We're going over steering box overhaul, but I have some rebuilt T arms, differntials, a Munice M-20, a TH400, and a working model of the t arm/bearings. I'll be glad to go over any question I can help with. You can IM if you want more info.
For the money you're going to spend you should be able to get a nice vette but remember they all come with some type of problem to address.
Good luck,
Gary

I just bought a vette, i used to be a ford person, my brother has a 65 fastback, and i wouldnt trade anything for my vette, their the most beautiful cars in the world, and they will blow any stang to shame. Do what i did, get some books, live on the CF, and read as much as you can about them.

Thanks for the offer, it's very much appreciated. If I can't make it this week, I'll stay in touch for future sessions. Thanka!
