Weight reduction for C5/Z06? Need to get a Z06 down to around 2700 lbs!!!!! Please help!!!!
I've had other cars that I've taken weight out of, the Z06 is the first car that I'm having any trouble at all figuring out how to take some weight out of it. Have any of you taken some weight out of your cars? If so, what did you do?
I have already taken out the obvious stuff:
tire flat fix kit (Z06)
ABS system
floor mats
storage cover (that thing in the trunk)
etc....
But what about A-arms, shocks, K-Member, swaybars, springs, carpet, etc.? The type of stuff that I took out of my other cars?
If you have not done it, please don't tell me the standard "why, it's a Vette?" response.
I'm looking to get a Z06 down to around 2700lbs. I know it's possible.....

Your not going to get 500 lbs out of the car... you can take out the motor...

As long as you cosidering the aluminum a-arms and fiberglass springs might as well take out that heavy old transmission and rear end.

If you don't have any feedback, shut the hell up. I know it can be done, if you have not tried, why do you even bother responding? This is a drag car only, no street use at all, I know there is at least 50lbs in heater core/lines/compressor, so if you don't know anything about this, I'm not asking you...

The curb weight is I believe 3118 pounds getting to 2700lbs is going to be a task. I doubt you'll find very many here who have found a way to shed 400lbs. But these suggestions might help if you are not concerned about being street legal.
Take out the passenger seat, the console and all of the carpet. Take off the airconditioning equipment and ductwork and the radio and speakers. Heater core and rest of the HVAC system. Take out the windshield washer system, Take the roof liner out, Take the airbags out. You could take out the entire passenger section of the dash by making a cut at just to the right of the DIC. You could take off the springs and front swaybar. Take out the radiator shroud, take the lights out. You might try a carbon fiber hood if it is lighter than the stock hood. Remove the hood liner, take the mirrors off. Gut the passenger door.
I know this all seems drastic but, you have to lose 400lbs and thats a lot of weight. This will get will make a dent but my guess is that even with all this you might still be a little heavy

Did you not read about the development of the Z06 how GM engineers did everything possible to make the Z06 as light as possible...things like putting thinner glass in the windshield, lighter tires, lighter wheels, etc?
2,700 pounds is impossible if you still want to be street legal. Are you trying to race in a 2,700 pound class or something? If you're building a race car, you might be able to get there by replacing the body with carbon fiber panels, taking the dash out, air conditioner, passenger seat, etc.

If it’s drag car only

Get rid of exhaust (open headers) – some nice weight savings there. :yesnod:

If you’re committed enough – get some Titanium custom made headers $$$, but save weight

Skinnies & slicks save ~50lb I hear

Get rid of sway bars (you don’t need ‘em for drag anyway)

I’m sure someone could fabricate controls arms out of some light weight material as well

Put drag brakes (some very thin rotors and light calipers good for drag only)

If you change your brake system – you could probably run 15” wheels (weight saving there as well) :yesnod:

Lexan glass

Light weight battery

NO alternator

Gut the interior (no pass seat, no carpet, no dash???)

Non-popup lights (I think ~10-15lb)

Again if you got the $$$ - change as many body panels as possible to carbon
fiber

I dunno if it’s possible, but maybe get rid of factory fuel tanks (how much do these weight?) and install a small plastic fuel cell
I think you can get there, but it’s gonna be $$$ and why?
Just buy some old POS and do the same…..

I'll take a jab at this one... What you are asking is a lot!! Here is the list that I would do if I absolutely wanted the lightest Z06 without regard to daily drivability and as a race car only setup:
1: Remove all carpet from interior
2: Remove Passenger Seat
3: Replace Drivers Seat with lightweight race only seat
4: Remove all plastic trim
5: Remove A/C Compressor and related components
6: Remove Entertainment system and all speakers/amps/etc...
7: Replace Flywheel with all aluminum version (-12-13 lbs)
8: Replace Clutch assembly with lighter version (6-8 lbs)
9: Replace Rotors with lightweight Ti versions (30-34 lbs) but BIG $$$
10:Replace hood with C/F Version (Also $$)
11: Look for lighter weight tires and wheels if available
12: Look into replacing all glass with acrylic
13: Replace stock exhaust manifolds with long tube ss headers
14: Eliminate catalytic converters
15: Replace center section of exhaust with stainless works 3" mid section
This is what I can think of off the top but I am sure others will chime in to add to the list!!
Good luck and let us know how you make out!!

Re: (syndicate)
You can replace you windshield with speed glass and you can get your rear and sides done in lexan also. The savings from dropping all the glass is pretty good.

Re: (411_monkey)
Some more things to consider:
carbon fiber body panels.
lightweight door hinges.
Remove the factory roll over hoop.
lexan rear window.
remove door glass and regulators- if legal to do so.
remove right side fuel tank? haven't tried this one yet.

Re: (3X2)
Do you want a street car or a race car?
I put some serious thought into it., you wont get 300lbs out of it unless you replace the body and windows, even then you might not.
For what its worth you will not be able to significantly lighten the suspension and chassis. Dont even bother trying. Our front and rear crossmembers weight less than most other car's "lightweight" aftermarket ones. I had no trouble picking up the entire rear subframe with lower control arms, uprights, springs and halfshafts still attached.
