Steel or Iron, how to tell?

Steel or Iron, how to tell?
How can I determine if a crank I just picked up (free) is steel or iron? Nice 3.48" stroke crank, everything looks good but wondering what it is made of. Gotta be an easy way. Thanks!

What is steel and what is iron?? What you mean is cast or forged. Forged has big parting lines. Cast has skinny little parting lines.
Steel is iron with additives. The simplist is just carbon
Look at the parting lines on the weights and it will tell.

Well, if The General made it, you can get a number off it and compare it to a reference like this one - http://www.mortec.com/cranks.htm
