Default a small scare on my shake-down drive today

I took the '69 out for a shake-down cruise today. I got the newly rebuilt front-end aligned on Wednesday, and have been itching to get out on the road and put a few careful miles on the new clutch, rebuild M-20, and all the other nice new shiny parts that took me a friggin' lifetime to get finished with :D

I find some back roads to cruise, working through the gears, checking the steering and suspension, and just taking it easy. When I got back to the main roads I came to a stoplight. Pulling away from the light I heard a rattle from somewhere, but I wasn't sure that it came from my car. Once I got moving I didn't hear anything else. Moving on, I stopped at a stop sign. Again, I heard what I thought was something loose, dragging under the front end of the car. Stopped and took a look. Nothing.

Got back to my street and stopped before the driveway. Heard it again. Oh S@#%, what is that???? Pulled into the garage and put the car up on the lift. Nothing is loose, everything looks fine. Rolled the car back and forth and heard the sound again. Pulled off the drivers side PO-2 wheelcover and found the front wheel bearing dust-cap laying loose inside the wheel. :bb Whew! Thank goodness it wasn't anything serious!

More miles to come on Sunday, once the rain passes.

Well at least it wasnt a couple of lug nuts or something that had came off. Still those little noises after doing something like you have just done makes you a little leary.

Same kind of thing happened to me last weekend. Sounded like a valve tap. Turned out to be a blown paper header gasket. Thinking thousands made me want to :U

Should be fun to install real aluminum gaskets this weekend.

 I agree, 'cause that's what I'm doing right now. First beer since last Saturday. I'm on the wagon during the week, gave up beer Mon-Fri for Lent :blueangel:

Now if the new clutch and the resurfaced flywheel would just take a seat and stop making the "rubbing" noise, I'd be all set.

Shannon, when are you going to pull those gay wheelcovers off and throw on some derby caps and trim rings? :D

A C, ya know what? For every 100+ Corvettes, Monte Carlo's, Camaros, Novas, and Chevelles that I see with rally wheels, I bet I don't even see one car with the deluxe wheelcovers. I have a great looking set of rally caps, and a brand new set of stainless trim rings. As of now, I prefer the look of the PO-2's. If I had the $$$ I'd buy a second set of wheels to mount a set of redline radials. I'd run the PO-2's on the redlines, and the rallys on the white letter radial T/A's. Maybe soon!

Shannon, good to hear all is well on the shake down cruise. If you make it out to the big town of Clayton look me up on Sunday. I got the the front end mostly back together and best of all the big brown truck showed up with my Keisler :hurray: Also you can point out any farse's I've had while putting the front end back together since you just went thru this. Dave..

Shannon,
Great to hear that your back on the road again and able to enjoy your vette!
I finally found what was making a noise that was comimg from the backside when I installed some more bumpers. One of the bolts holding passenger side outer bumper bracket was loose and rattling.
Happy motoring! :steering:
