Starter question!
I am about to replace my starter....It has staggered install bolts....I bought a universal mini starter & the bolts are not staggered...I called the place I bought it from & he said the when I take the old starter out I will see 4 bolt holes ? My engine is not origional (crate)....It is a 383 stroker with the dipstick on the drivers side. So when I take my old starter out will thier be 4 holes or his the guy who sold me the starter full of poopie?

Re: Starter question! (yoslambo1@cs.com)
The SBC has two starter bolt patterns, as you discovered. One pattern is the staggered, like yours and the other has the two holes, straight in line with each other, 90* to the crank centerline. The two bolt patterns have one common hole location. Therefore, your block should be drilled and tapped for three starter mounting holes, not four. I forget which is which, but one pattern is for 153 tooth flywheel/flexplates, and the other is for the 168 toothers. You are gong to need the starter for the bolt pattern you removed. The wrong one may bolt up, but it will either miss and not enage with the ring gear, or the other way, it will hit on the ring gear and not slide up on to it. I don't know how the non-OEM style a mini starter, is set up to deal with the two bolt patterns. Anything "universal" scares the crap out of ME. Good luck, and...

Re: Starter question! (yoslambo1@cs.com)
153 tooth =straight holes.
168 tooth =offset.
Has your universal starter got 4 holes in a straight line?
If so this allows you to use the 2 inline holes normally used for the small (153 tooth ) flywheel but gives you offsets to suit both flywheel sizes.
As yours was originally staggered (168) you will use the holes that position the starter further away from the block using the the 2 inline holes.
168 tooth =offset.

168 tooth =offset. That's the way I remembered it, but I didn't want to say so, because of possible brain fade. All the rest sounds right, too. Yoslambo, you should be good to go. Good luck, and...
