Default How to diagnose bad coil

My tach board smoked the other day, and now I have no power at all. I just charged the battery and checked the voltage. My distributor is as old as dirt and the coil too. Could the coil have gone bad and caused a power surge to the tach circuit board? I had noticed of late that the tach needle has a slight bound to it...not sure if this is related to my new problem. Also, can I test the coil without any power?

Remove the coil to distributor wire at the distributor and place the connector that pushes into the distributor cap near the engine block or intake manifold then crank the engine over (be careful to keep it away from the carb and make sure you don't have any raw gas or oil in the area). If your coil is working the you will get a spark just like you would if you were checking an individual spark plug wire. Don't zap yourself also. :smash:
