I went out to look at a '74 #s match LS4 coupe for sale today and it had a exterior trim code of "14L" ... the car is black, but it's obvious it started as a silver mist/silver leather car.

Is 14L actually "914 'Late'?"

The "L" is for "Lower" as opposed to "Upper" for two-tone paint schemes. The 9 was dropped. Since the Corvette was not offered in a two-tone paint scheme, the L paint code is the only one showing.

I believe this started in 1974. And I believe it's correct, but others will chime in I'm sure. I don't have my black book handy to look up the 14 code.

I just looked in the black book...it notes that some use L -- has no meaning to c3 owners.

mayberg is correct. If you've ever seen a '74 and up "build sheet" OR "broadcast sheet"(which is what it really is), at the middle far right you'll see where the paint codes are listed. On my "broadcast sheet" it says "Color 80 upper", and directly below that another line that says "Color 80 lower". This is what the "L" stands for.

SECONDARY COLOR, XTERIOR, LT GRAY MET (92)

The 14L actually refers to the RPO code. The color I believe is 92 (light gray metallic)
