Side Pies on a Car with Rear Mufflers?
Hey all,
Just interested in putting side exhaust with the fibergalss covers on my '72. Right now there is the typical rear exits in the bumper. Is there a product to fill in the opening where the old muffler tips were in case I decided to go to side pipes?
Thanks for the help!
Tom

I'm going to have the same problem soon. I plan on attaching the square exhaust outlets in their current position. Most people won't be near smart enough to realize they aren't functional and they will fill an otherwise ugly hole.

I'm also planning on the same thing.. I've been checking the companies (Ecklers, Mid-America and Vanacor Vettes) and they have the rear panels that replace the stock ones. Just need to paint them to match the car.

I just bought the panel Friday. It is Ecklers PN 10239 - $159.99. :)

Tom78 ...
First question - are you going to use factory covers and muffler/pipe assemblies?
If so, I would not replace the rear valence just to quickly.
These pipes are REALLY loud at speed.
Louad enough to warrant ear plugs.
I kinda think I know why they stopped putting them on cars after mid 69 ....
I made the mistake of doing the replacing of the valence and now I am wishing I could go back to the original under car/rear exit exhaust.
I just spent 250 bucks on a nice radio and can't hear a damn thing when I'm cruzing around.
They look real nice - sound real cool.
Just try em for a while before you make a mod that is pretty close to permenant.
And keep all the original parts, molding etc ... on the side.
May need them one day again.
Best of luck - you will enjoy the pipes and music they make.

Well, the whole scenario was just an idea. I have Hooker Super Competition headers and Side pipes on my '78 and those sound great and look good... until you get stuck in the rain or hit a puddle and the road junk gets baked on those pipes like a kiln. Maintenance was a real pain in the rear. I am very inexperienced in body work and do not want to undertake a project like that since the paint on my '72 is only 2 years old!
I think I am going to stick with getting a set of Dynomax Ultro Flo mufflers and keep the rear cutouts in the bumper.
FYI, the title of this post "Side Pies" is a screw up on my part... it was really late when I made the post
Thanks for all the help!

There was someone here a few weeks ago that said he installed the rear panel with minor grinding and sanding in about an hour.
