Clean with liberal amounts of Simple Green. Wipe down eveything with lacquer thinner, the follow up with a wipe down of Prep-Sol. Then paint the engine bay with John Deere Blitz Black spraypaint. It's a nice eggshell finish black that lays down really well and is very durable. Plus it's nearly an exact match for the original blackout paint that was use in St Louis.

I used Eastwood's "underhood black".

Just how clean do ya want to get the compartment? You'd think with the engine out most everything would be accessible. I found it to be still pretty difficult since you are working around parts that were never intended to be painted. I cleaned things with Mean Green and sprayed my '74 compartment with Krinkle paint. I was not looking for perfect..
