Default Just installed True Dual 50 Series Flowmaster!

I just drove the car after having a 2.5" dual exhaust with 50 series Flowmasters installed, no cats. :auto: I am totally amazed by the sound difference. I think it has more hp too, but it's hard to tell because I can't get over the great rumbling sound. I wanted to get a h-pipe installed, but the mechanic said there wasn't enough room   The car was fun to drive before the new exhaust, but now I just want to stay in the car. I'll try to get the sound recorded and up on the net for those who are contemplating the Flowmaster 50 series.

Mechanic was hosing you!

I have the '50s installed with an X-Pipe and I also love the sound - but I'm sure they are much quieter than yours because of the X.

Enjoy!

I'm looking at them too.
Now, a dumb question----what is the difference between 40's and 50's???????/

For one thing the 40's are louder.

When you get bored with those 50s in a few months, try a couple of Dynomax Race Bullets.

I took a look underneath and it looks like there is enough room for the h-pipe also. But that's ok, it sounds great. The 50's just did fit; I would have gone with the 40's, if the 50's didn't fit, since the 40's are shorter. One thing that was pointed out to me by the mechanic was that my '81 exhaust pipes didn't run through a crossmember. My crossmember is apparently contoured so that the pipes run under it. Does anyone know if this is just with the 81's? I'll look at the assembly manual tonight...

How much difference will an h or x pipe provide? Should I find someone that can insert one?

It really balances the flow of the exhaust and took almost all or the resonance away from my system which the 40's are famous for.
It evenly splits, smoothes, and synchronizes exhaust pressures at all engine speeds. The high and low pressure pulses in the two pipes are evenly imposed on each other, leveling out the pulse time history pressure differences between right and left cylinder banks. Re-synchronizing the exhaust pulses reduces back pressure, cancels sound, and provides additional scavaging. Tests have sound 6 dBa (75%) reduction in sound levels, and increases of 10 to 30 hp, and up to 40 ft-lbs. of torque! Economy, and throttle response are improved. Exhaust flow after the crossover is completely smoothed out. The job the headers started is finished.

One of the most appealing benefits of this system is the modified exhaust note. The deep growling and popping sound is replaced by a higher pitched smooth sound. The exhaust note is similar to a 180 degree header system without the nightmare of tubing.

I believe all C3 corvettes have the exhaust running through the cross member. Thus the reason for the the two openings in the crossmember. The mechanic did run the pipe throught the crossmember correctly didn't he?

My crossmember did not have holes. It was contoured/molded around the top of the pipes. Is it possible I have some kind of aftermarket crossmember or does it appear that Bubba has been under my car? Either way, it appears that I not "missing" a crossmember, but that it is different than most, right?

Give it about 30 days and you'll want the 40's. Especially if you like the flowmaster tone. By the way, if you do change your mind I have a speed shop I can put you in touch with - they sell the 40's, any size, input/outputs, for around $45 each.
I installed the h-pipe as well and really like the sound.

81 & 82 had a different crossmember than the earlier c3 cars. The floors were modified to account for the driver power seat. It was also pretty much ordained that dual exhaust was a done for entiity for the Corvette. Your is probably stock with some unique pipe work.

My crossmember did not have holes. It was contoured/molded around the top of the pipes. Is it possible I have some kind of aftermarket crossmember or does it appear that Bubba has been under my car? My 81 has a hump on the right side for the single pipe.

Although the left side floor is a little lower, I think true duals could
be installed without major clearance problems with careful routing.

I understand that bowtieoverdrives.com makes a double hump crossmember for OD auto's that really helps putting in duals.

I've got Flowmaster DELTA FLOW 40's on mine and I absolutely love them  The delta flow 40's are a little quieter than regular 40's. I have a true dual system with no cats, but I still need to put in an "X" pipe. Man, what a great sound :hurray:   :yesnod:

OK... I'm still learning :)

I have a 77 with a cross member that has two holes, only one is being used as the car is currently stock with single exhaust and a cat.

I want to run true dual exhaust and get rid of the cat since I am exempt for inspection. I thought the exhaust ran straight back, but I am reading about H or X set-ups. Can someone explain how the layout would be? Does the dual exhaust go through both holes in the cross member and then go to H or X?

Sorry for the elementary question, but I want to know what I'm talking about if I go have it done. I'd like to do it myself, but I'm sure it would need to be custom and welded which I'm not going to tackle.

Thanks! :seeya
