Depends on what you want.
I worked in a Trophy and Plaque shop in high school. They use CNC like table top router systems, you basically power point what you want and the machine makes it.
Trophy/plaque shops can make plates in aluminum, brass or plastic. The trouble with a product like this is the scratching or burnishing is not very deep and the finish is not very scratch resistant. From a trophy shop plastic would be a better option as they can engrave much deeper. If you are using say a 1/4" font you can engrave 1/32 or more deep. The plastic comes in many different foreground/background color combinations and the foreground color layer is of significant thickness.
To have a CNC shop make something is going to be quite a bit more expensive, but the engraving can be much deeper, they can even reverse type (i.e. the letters are raised and the background sunken.

The conversion is moving along. Should have the motor back in by the end of next month. Hopefully running by year end.

Ya know I never see anyone else do this, but I have had this type of work done MANY times. Go to your local Technical School's machine shop. Most of them out there have cnc machines now and all you pay for is MATERIAL!!!!

I've done switch plates/dashboards/etc out of plastic or aluminum myself. Sand with 400 grit, use dry transfer lettering/lines (available at drafting supply stores), then clear coat over that. Lettering is available in almost any size, font, color, etc and it looks very professional when done. Cost is only a couple bucks. BTW, it's very durable too. I've done several boat dashboards that have held up for years.

I guess a peice of plastic cut to fit and custom stick on letters would work.

Kevin Williams from Williams and Sons Engraving will make you one. I had intentions of getting some 5 speed TKO plates made and Summer has been to busy for me to address it. I will probably have some made this Winter for my '80. I really needed an old plate to use for a pattern to make the blank.Jim

I called Kevin today and ordered two sets of ZZ430. Haven't decided yet where to put them, I'm thinking one set on my back bumper. That way when I blow by a "stang or "ricer" they'll say "WTF?, what's a ZZ430"? :D
