I "think" I found the problem
For any of you that have been following my pre-oiling/oil running out the back of the engine adventures, I think I found the problem. I took a week off on vacation, but am now back at it. In the picture, in the top most hole on the flywheel there are two holes that I am almost positive are leaking the oil. My question is, is what are the two holes? and how do I plug them?
Thanks,
Karl

Is that the back of the oil galley? and if it is aren't there supposed to be two pipe plugs there? I may be totally looking at it wrong and/or stupid.

I honestly have no idea. I can see into the block far back with a light so I know it goes into the block. I just got the grand idea to go look at my old block, and there is just a "Freeze" type plug there so I dont know if that is what should be there or if this block is set up differently.

Looks like Desertvette nailed it in the previous thread. . .
Cleburne is close to where I live. Hope to see your car on the road one day.
Hope you enjoy the 383, I really like mine!
Not likely the rear main seal is leaking from just priming. The crankshaft has a deflector on it to keep oil from spraying directly on the seal and it's not under direct oil pressure but spray from the rear bearing. I think the seal would have been left out completely to have a large puddle from just priming.
More likely one of the 3 oil galley plugs or the cam journal plug just above the crank all under direct pressure.
If you go to the left aft head surface area on the block there is a plug there also that is sometimes left out and is a drilled oil port and last of all is the oil pressure port at the top of the block just to the left of the distributor. LOL

:iagree: Plug missing, get a new one form NAPA use some #2 on the edge and drive it in with a lg socket. You only want it to seat about an 1/8" in from the edge of the boss. Don't hit the cam.

Re: I "think" I found the problem (gtr1999)
Thanks!
Another rookie question... What is some #2, and what is an lg socket. I am really kinda nervous to do this after you said "dont hit the cam" a little more detailed installation instruction would be much appreciated.
Much thanks again,
Karl

I would pull the cam out to see if you got any dirt in there and toasted the bearing, then put the plug in, or at least pull the cam forward far enough to inspect the rear edge of the bearing. That is scary to have been run like that.

Re: I "think" I found the problem (Fevre)
It hasn't been run at all. I am just installing and pre-oiling caused me to find that there was no plug back there. I just need to be 100% sure I know how to put in the plug before i do something stupid...

#2 - Permatex #2 gasket sealer (sticky brown goop in a tube).
lg socket - Large socket - diameter that fits nicely inside the cup of the freeze plug.
Good luck. :seeya

And if you are unsure of how to do the job STOP!!! and ask for a local members help. It's about an hour job (Including parts and beer run) and better to be safe than sorry, you ding the cam and you are up shiats creek
